Glasvegas - Euphoric Heartbreak (2011). Entrevista a Paul Donoghue

Glasvegas es un grupo escocés de Glasgow (de ahí su nombre) con un estilo y una voz que le distingue claramente de otros grupos nada más escucharlos, y creo que de los más premiados que conozco con solo un disco en el mercado. Ahora sacan este nuevo disco.

El grupo realiza un rock alternativo, mezclado con elementos electrónicos y crear un estilo peculiar y diferente que ya está siendo imitado por algunos grupos como The Vaccines. La banda se formó por los primos James y Rab Allan y con Paul Donoghue y Ryan Ross a la batería en 2003.

Tras sacar varios singles de éxitos, publicaron su primer disco con el primer single como canción inédita, Geraldine. En 2011 editaron Euphoric Heartbreak (2011) una increíble obra que nos deja ver que no es una banda de un éxito, si no que hay mucho Glasvegas por delante.

Tras su fantástico disco de debut de título homónimo en 2008, Glasvegas firman una continuación, si cabe mejor, con esta colección de nuevos temas.  Realmente con una calidad muy superior a la mostrada  en su anterior disco. Pasan con nota alta la prueba del segundo disco.

The word is yours es un regalo para los oídos, sincera, nostálgica y emotiva, como todas las canciones de esta banda. El primer single de este disco ha sido Euphoria, Take My Hand  que representa perfectamente el estilo del grupo. Pain Pain, Never Again, es el primer tema del disco. Un comienzo sinfónico, épico, es una introducción espectacular al disco. You, es un canto casi místico a ti, sinfónico, intenso, romántico, ... Y luego obtuso, oscuro, denso...

¿Por qué el nombre de “Glasvegas”?

A James se le ocurrió el nombre, poco antes de que nos llamáramos Glasvegas. Queríamos un nombre que no sonara como ninguna otra cosa, así que pensamos en Glasvegas. Ha resultado ser un poco como Marmite, algunas personas lo aman, otros lo odian, pero nos encantan los extremos, así que estamos contentos de que nadie piense que "simplemente está bien".

Why the name "Glasvegas"?

James came up with the name shortly before we became Glasvegas. We wanted a name that didn't really sound like anything else, so we thought of Glasvegas. It's turned out to be a bit like Marmite, some people love it, others hate it, but we love extremes so we're glad no-one really thinks it's "just ok". 

La música de Glasvegas me recuerda a un mix entre el pop rock electrónico de los 80 y el rock denso de los 90 pero con la fuerza del siglo XXI y la magia de Glasvegas ¿cuáles son realmente vuestras influencias musicales?

Eso es siempre una pregunta difícil, porque nuestras influencias pueden venir de cualquier parte. Puedes inspirarte al salir a caminar, ver una película, incluso en el baño. Musicalmente hemos sido inspirados por tanto, que podría llenar un libro con los artistas, pero algunos de ellos son: Bob Marley, U2, Echo and the Bunnymen, Elvis Presley, The Raveonettes, David Bowie, Philip Glass, Tchaikovsky, Vangelis, Oasis, Phil Spector.

The Music of Glasvegas reminds me a mix between the electronic pop rock of the

80’s and the dense rock of the 90’s with the force of the 21^st century and the magic of Glasvegas, what are your musical influences?

That's always a hard question because our influences can come from anywhere. You can be inspired by going for a walk, watching a movie, even sitting in the bath. Musically we have been inspired by so much that I could fill a book with artists, but some of them are ; Bob Marley, U2, Echo and The Bunnymen, Elvis Presley, The Raveonettes, David Bowie, Philip Glass, Tchaikovsky, Vangelis, Oasis, Phil Spector. 

¿Qué vamos a encontrar diferente en vuestro último álbum " Euphoric Heartbreak "? ¿Por qué lo llamastéis "Euphoric Heartbreak”?

A James se le ocurrió el nombre. Como he dicho antes, nos gustan los extremos y la euforia y la angustia son dos extremos de las emociones humanas. Creo que el sonido ha evolucionado un poco desde el primer álbum, James siempre dice que el primer disco era un niño pequeño con los ojos abiertos mirando el mundo, y el segundo era el chico de pantalones vaqueros y en busca de problemas. No sé lo que hará el tercero!

What’s different in your last album, “Euphoric Heartbreak”? Why did you title it "Euphoric Heartbreak”?

James came up with the name. As I mentioned earlier, we like extremes and euphoria and heartbreak are two extremes of human emotions. I think the sound had grown up a little from the first album, James always says the first album was a little kid with wide eyes looking at the world, and the second was the kid trying on a pair of jeans and looking for trouble. I don't know what the third one will do though!

Esta no es la primera vez que actuáis en concierto en España. Creo que es… ¿la tercera? ¿Qué vais a ofrecer en vivo, y qué esperáis del público español en vuestros espectáculos?

Esperamos que la gente se divirtiera tanto como lo hacemos nosotros en los shows. Siempre nos divertimos, no importa lo que ocurra y realmente esto se transmite a la multitud. La primera vez que vinimos a España estábamos empezando a hacer giras fuera del Reino Unido por lo que todos estábamos muy contentos de estar allí. Tenemos un montón de recuerdos de nuestros divertidos looks caminando por la playa vestidos de pies a cabeza con vaqueros y chaquetas de cuero negras. ¡Nos vestiremos más acordes al tiempo esta vez!

This is not your first time in Spain. I think it may be ... the third time? What are offering in your live concert, and what do you hope from the Spanish people in your shows?

We hope that people enjoy themselves as much as we do at the shows. We always have fun no matter what happens and that really bleeds out into the crowd. The first time we came to Spain we had just started touring outside of the U.K. so we were all really excited to be there. We got a lot of funny looks walking along the beach dressed head to toe in black jeans and leather jackets. We'll dress more accordingly this time!




¿Hay alguna sorpresa o planes alternativos para vuestra gira de 2012?, ¿algo que podáis anticiparnos?

Vamos a una gran cantidad de países en los que no hemos estado mucho este año para los festivales. Acabamos de regresar de China, que fue increíble, me gustaría recomendar a cualquier banda que vaya allí. Volveremos también a Rumanía. Grabamos nuestro disco de Navidad allí "A Snowflake Fell And It Felt Like A Kiss", y lo pasamos muy bien. También estamos trabajando en nuestro tercer álbum este año también, así que tocaremos nuevas canciones que se estamos grabando.

Do you have any surprise or any alternative plans for this 2012 tour? Can you anticipate anything to us?

We're going to a lot of countries we haven't been to a lot this year for festivals. We have just returned from China, which was amazing, I'd recommend any band going there. A return to Romania is happening too. We recorded our Xmas album there, "A Snowflake Fell and It Felt like a Kiss", and had a great time. We're also starting our third album this year too, so there will be some new songs being played.

¿Pensáis que el mundo digital va a acabar con el mundo de la música tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día? Cuál es el futuro del músico?

Creo que la música siempre va a estar. Hay más normas para dejar de compartir archivos de forma ilegal, y las compañías discográficas están cada vez mejor en el uso de medios digitales para producir álbumes. Los músicos parecen estar mejorando en su música como evento, en lugar de centrarse sólo en las canciones que vienen con formas más imaginativas de presentar la música a la gente.

Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?

I think that music will always be around. There are more rules coming in to stop illegal file sharing, and record companies are becoming better at using digital to get albums out. Musicians seem to be getting better at making their music an event too, rather than just focusing on the songs they are coming up with more imaginative ways to present that music to people.



¿Cuál es vuestro mejor recuerdo en el mundo de la música?

Hay tantos. Somos muy afortunados porque hacemos lo que nos gusta para ganarnos la vida por lo que no sientes que realmente sea un trabajo. Viajamos por el mundo con las personas que amamos, y la oportunidad de conocer y entretener a tanta gente que cada día nos da un gran recuerdo. La grabación del álbum por primera vez en Nueva York era una cosa especial para mí. Yo era apenas un niño de Glasgow que quería llegar a vivir mis sueños los sueños de otras muchas personas. Fue surrealista, pero increíble.

What is your best memory about music?

There are so many. We are very lucky people that we get to do what we love for a living so it doesn't ever feel like a job. We travel the world with the people we love and get to meet and entertain so many people that every day gives us a great memory. Recording the first album in New York was a special thing for me though. I was just a kid from Glasgow getting to live out mine and so many other people’s dreams. It was surreal, but amazing.

¿Habéis oído hablar del #15-M o también llamada la #Spanish-revolution? ¿Qué pensáis al respecto?

No sabía nada de ello. Eché un vistazo en Internet mientras respondía a esta entrevista y no me gustaría hacer comentarios sobre un movimiento tan importante sin aprender más sobre él primero. Buscaré más información, así que gracias por abrirme los ojos a ello.

Have you heard of the #15-M also called the #Spanish-revolution? What do you think about it?

I didn't know about any of them. I had a look online as I was answering this though and wouldn't like to comment on such an important movement without learning more about it first. I will look more into it though so thank you for opening my eyes to it.

¿Podriais decirnos…

... Un libro?:

Acabo de terminar de leer Snow Angels, de James Thomson. Es un poco macabro, pero en algunos lugares una gran lectura.

...Una película?:

Blade Runner. Creo que esta película ha sido probablemente una de las cosas más inspiradoras que jamás hemos visto u oído. Ridley Scott logró crear una de las mayores obras de arte en el momento que él lo hizo. Creo que incluso en mil años, todavía se verá futurista y como algo único.

...Una canción?:

Una vez más, que podría escribir un libro con reflexiones sobre las canciones. He oído "Five Years", de David Bowie, mi canción favorita de Bowie. Es una canción muy emotiva, creo que sobre todo que es por la forma en la que Bowie canta, al borde de la desesperación, es increíble. Nadie más podía hacer esa canción en la forma en que él la hizo, y esa es una de las cosas más importantes de la música para mí, ser único.

... Un album?:

El debut de Elvis Presley es fantástico. Siempre me gustaría haber estado presente cuando este fue lanzado para ver la forma en que ayudó a cambiar a toda una generación, culturalmente. Creo que cada artista que ha cogido una guitarra o cantado, tarareado en la ducha ¡debe Elvis unas cervezas!

... Un grupo o solista?:

Nuestro buen amigo, Ren Harvieu, acaba de estrenarse con su primer álbum, "Through The Night". Una voz increíble y una persona inspiradora y única,  deberías comprobarlo.



Could you tell us about...

... A book?:

I've just finished reading Snow Angels, by James Thomson. It's a bit gruesome in places but a great read.

... A movie?:

Blade Runner. I think this film has probably been one of the most inspiring things we have ever seen or heard. Ridley Scott managed to create one of the greatest pieces of art ever when he done this. I think that even in a thousand years, this will still feel futuristic and like nothing else around.

... A song?:

Again, I could write a book with thoughts on songs. I heard "Five Years" by David Bowie today though, my favourite Bowie song. It is a really emotional song, I think especially the way Bowie sings on it, bordering on desperation at points, is amazing. No one else could do that song the way he done it, and that is one of the most important things in music to me, being unique.

... An album?:

Elvis Presley's Debut is fantastic. I always wish I had been around when this was released to see how it helped to change a whole generation, culturally. I think every artist who has ever picked up a guitar or sang or hummed in the shower owes Elvis a few beers!

... A group or soloist?:

Our good friend, Ren Harvieu, has just realeased her first album, "Through The Night". An amazing voice and an inspirational person, again unique, and you should check her out.
