The Muggs o La más fea banda del mundo es un grupo estadounidense de blues-rock de Detroit, Michigan. Formada en febrero de 2000 por el guitarrista Danny Methric, el bajista Tony DeNardo y el baterista Matt Rost. En diciembre de 2008 estuvieron en la lista de 100 Hot Unsigned Band por la revista Music Connection. Ganaron varios premios, incluyendo el Mejor Artista de Blues y la mejor banda de rock para el año 2007, y tienen más de 86.000 fans en Myspace.

¿Qué puedes decirnos al respecto?
Para mí, la música de la
década de 1960 y principios de 1970 fue el período más creativo e innovador
para el rock. Bandas como The Beatles, Queen y Humble Pie, son algunos de
nuestros favoritos. Son las bandas que me más me inspiran, junto con la música
de blues estadounidense. Así, sólo queremos escribir música en los mismos
estilos que las bandas que nos inspiran. Nos encantan los grandes acordes y
melodías agradables que son las señas de identidad de principios de 1970 en las
canciones de rock.
In your latest album, Born Ugly you continue with the hard blues of seventies
mixed with classic rock sounds from the sixties. It seems The Muggs is
inspired by the sounds of the 70’s in their themes. What can you tell us about
it?
To me, the music of the late 1960s and
early 1970s was the most creative and innovative period for rock. Bands like
The Beatles, Queen and Humble Pie are some of our favourites. Those are the band
that inspire me the most, along with American blues music. So ultimately, we
just want to write music in the same styles of the bands that inspire us. We
just love big riffs and nice melodies which are the hallmarks of early 1970s
rock songs.
¿Cuál es la razón por la que una banda
estadounidense de Detroit hace una gira larga e intensa por toda Europa? ¿Qué
esperáis del público español?
Tenemos la suerte de estar
haciendo una gira por Europa. Este tipo de viajes son los aspectos más destacados
de nuestra carrera. Tuvimos la suerte de encontrar a Natalia, nuestra promotora.
Ella se encargó y estamos muy emocionados de llevar nuestra marca de blues-rock
al extranjero. Ójala el público español esté tan emocionado como nosotros. Pensamos
dar un gran concierto.
Which is the reason that leads to an American band from Detroit, to do a long
and intense tour around Europe ? What do you expect about Spanish public?
We are just lucky to be doing a European
tour. These types of tours are the highlights of our career. We were very
fortunate to find Natalia, our tour organizer. She put all of this together and
we are so excited to bring our brand of blues-rock overseas. Hopefully the Spanish
audiences are as excited as we are. We plan on delivering a hell of a concert.

el público en vuestro show?
Como ya sabes, tenemos un
nuevo disco llamado a "Born Ugly", que ha estado recibiendo críticas
muy buenas hasta ahora. Vamos a tocar muchas canciones de ese disco, así como canciones
de los dos anteriores. Vamos a tocar un conjunto de canciones diferentes cada
noche para ofrecer un show fresco y mantener la emoción. También, vamos a estar
tocando algunos covers de bandas interesantes que nos gustan. Bandas como Free,
Savoy Brown, ZZ Top, The Beatles, Sam and Dave, y por supuesto, Rory Gallagher,
somos grandes fans de él ¡Será un buen espectáculo del viejo rock de moda de
los años 70!
What will be different on this European tour? What will audience see at your
show?
As you already know, we have a new record
out called "born ugly" which has been getting really nice reviews so
far. We will be playing a lot of songs from that record as well as song from
the previous two. We are going to play a different set list every night to keep
things fresh and exciting. Also, we are going to be playing some cool
covers from bands that we really like. Bands like Free, Savoy Brown, ZZ
Top, The Beatles, Sam and Dave, and of course, Rory Gallagher, we are all huge
fans of him. It should be a good old fashioned 70s rock show!
En cuanto a vuestra agenda de conciertos ¡no tenéis
fechas libres hasta mediados de agosto! ¿Cómo es estar siempre viajando por el
mundo? ¿Cuándo encontráis tiempo para relajaros o para seguir componiendo?
Hemos estado de gira, muy
ocupados con la promoción del nuevo álbum. Además, yo soy un camarero en un bar
llamado el Café Cadieux en Detroit, así que estoy siempre en movimiento. Es
difícil encontrar tiempo para relajarse y escribir, pero siempre estoy anotando
ideas para el siguiente disco. Cuando volvamos a Europa, vamos a reunirnos y
profundizar en algunas ideas para el próximo disco.
Looking at your concert schedule, you have no free dates until middle August! How
is always travelling around the world? When do you find time for yourself to
relax or to continue composing?
We have been very busy touring to promote
the new album. Plus I am a bartender at a bar called the Cadieux Cafe in Detroit Europe , we are going to get
together and flesh out some ideas for the next record.

nuevo proyecto? ¿Podéis anticiparnos algo? ¿Estaréis de gira todo el año?
Esperamos tener un nuevo trabajo
a finales del año. Vamos a tocar en un montón de festivales musicales de verano
en Detroit también. Eso es siempre divertido. Sin embargo, los tres estamos
también muy ocupados con otras bandas. Tony acaba de lanzar un disco en
solitario llamado "Kid Gloves", que es excelente. Tony Todd y yo
también tocamos en la banda tributo de Peter Green Fleetwood Mac llamada
Rattlesnake Shake. Todd acaba de grabar un disco con Jeremy Spencer, que debe
estar ya en el mercado. También estoy en una banda de blues llamada los
Rumpshakers, como se puede ver, nos encanta tocar diferentes tipos de música. Estamos
tan ocupados como podemos, pero The Muggs son nuestra prioridad número 1.
What are your the plans for 2012? Do you have any new projects? Can you
anticipate anything to us? … Or you will be in a tour all the year?
Hopefully we will have a new record by the
end the year. We are going to play a lot of summer music festivals around Detroit
¿Creéis que el mundo digital va a terminar con la
música tal como la conocemos hoy en día? ¿Cuál crees que es el futuro de la
música?
La mayor víctima de la
revolución digital es la disminución de las discográficas y la industria de la
música en general. Hay un montón de bandas increíbles por ahí, pero nadie firma
ya con discográficas. No hay más dinero para promover una banda por lo que las
bandas tienen que promoverse a sí mismas. Lo positivo es que podemos hacer la
música que queremos hacer sin un sello que te obliga a escribir un single de
éxito. Estos son tiempos interesantes para ser un músico activo. Tengo mucha
curiosidad en cuanto al futuro de la industria de la música. Creo que de alguna
manera las cosas van a mejorar porque, francamente, que en realidad no puede
ser peor. Alguien encontrará la manera de que la situación mejore y siempre
habrá gente dedicada a la música.
Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do
you think is the future of music?
The biggest casualty of the digital
revolution is the decline of the record labels and the music industry in
general. There is a lot of amazing bands out there but no one is getting
signed anymore. There is no more money to promote a band so the bands have
to promote themselves. One positive is that we can make the music we want
to make without a label forcing you to write a hit single. These are
interesting times to be a working musician. I am really curious as to what the
future holds as far as the music industry is concerned. I really think
that things will somehow get better because frankly, they really can't get any
worse. Somebody will figure out how to build a better mousetrap and people
will always be playing the blues.
¿Cuál es tu mejor recuerdo de la música?
Recuerdo que cuando tenía
unos 5 o 6 años y estaba fascinado por los Beatles. Me gustaba jugar con mis
juguetes y poner a recopilación de grandes éxitos The Red Beatles. Cuando tuve el
álbum The Blue quedé enganchado por completo. Con 12 años tenía todos los discos
de los Beatles. Son realmente mi mayor influencia. Sin embargo, cuando tenía 22
años, un amigo de la familia me prestó "Blue Matter" and "Raw Sienna"
de Savoy Brown. Yo nunca había oído el blues tocado así, por lo psicodélico y duro.
Yo sabía que era el sonido que estaba buscando. Tony y yo formamos The Muggs
poco después de eso y hemos estado tocando blues-rock desde entonces.
What is your best memory about music?
I remember when I was about 5 or 6 years
old and I was fascinated by The Beatles. I would play with my toys and put
on The Red Beatles hits compilation. Then I got The Blue one and was
completely hooked. I had every Beatles record by the time I was 12. They
are truly my biggest influence. But when I was 22, a family friend lent me "Blue Matter" and "Raw Sienna"
by Savoy Brown. I had never heard the blues played like that, so
psychedelic and heavy. I knew that was the sound I was looking for. Tony
and I formed The Muggs soon after that and we have been playing blues-rock ever
since.

al respecto?
Hemos oído hablar de la #Spanish
Revolution. Realmente tratamos de estar informados sobre los asuntos mundiales,
así como la política de nuestro país. Es difícil tener una opinión sobre las
luchas de otro país, porque no vivimos allí para ver el día a día. Vivimos en
un país grande, pero imperfecto. Nosotros elegimos crear positividad través de
la música y espero inspirar a la gente a ser creativa por sí misma. Todo es
posible a través de la música.

Have you heard of the #Spanish-Revolution? What do you think about it?
We have heard of the #Spanish
Revolution. We really try to keep informed on world affairs as well as the
politics of our own country. It is hard to have an opinion on the
struggles of another country because we don't live there to see the day to day
affairs. We live in a great but flawed country ourselves. We just
choose to create positivity through music and hopefully inspire people to
become creative themselves. All things are possible through music.

favorito ahora mismo es "Suttree" de Cormac McCarthy que también es

nuevo disco. "Cantando bajo la lluvia" es mi película favorita por la
interpretación de Gene Kelly y es una obra maestra. "Strawberry Fields
Forever" es también una obra maestra y creo que la mejor canción que he
escuchado. Tengo muchos discos que podría decir que son mis favoritos, pero me
quedo con "Revolver" y "Abbey Road" de The Beatles con la
mención honorífica a "White Pepper"
de Ween... un verdadero clásico moderno. Y Brian May es mi guitarrista
favorito. Lo hace todo bien, el tono, la melodía, el vibrato, la armonía... un
verdadero pionero. Realmente me gustaría tocar como él y me encantaría
conocerlo, puestos a soñar.

Great question. My favourite book
right now is "Suttree" by Cormac McCarthy who is also my new favourite
author. He inspired the song "Blood Meridian" on our new
record. "Singin' in the rain" is my favourite movie because Gene
Kelly rules and it is a masterpiece. "Strawberry Fields Forever"
is also a masterpiece and I think the greatest song I have ever heard. I
have so many records I could say are my favourite but I will have to go with
"Revolver" and "Abbey Road" by The Beatles with an honourable
mention to "White Pepper" by Ween...a true modern classic and Brian May
is my all-time favourite guitar player. He does everything right; tone,
melody, vibrato, harmony...a true pioneer. I really wish I could play like
him. And I would really love to meet him, dare to dream.
