THE INTERVIEW
THE INTERVIEW
influencias musicales?
The songs of Dare sounds like an elegant Rock where I can detect Hard Rock and bit of Pop also. A mix of styles that results on the personal and beautiful sound of your music. But, what are really your musical influences?
Thanks
Josechu, that’s kind of you to say. Over the years I have had many influences.
Thin Lizzy, were obviously a big influence on me, but I was also trained
classically on piano. So I have a great love for rock music, and for classical
music too. I guess Dare are a mix of rock and classical, Throw in the mix my
love of traditional Irish& Welsh music, and I guess somewhere out of all
that, you get the DARE sound.
primer álbum llamado "Out of the Silence".
Next year will mark 32 years since you formed in 1985 and almost 30 from you edited your first album named “Out of the Silence”. What is the difference between the music of Dare today and your music 30 years ago?
Age and
experience! But to be honest, not a lot really. Out of the Silence what written
very sincerely and without any external pressures from Record Companies or
Press. It was Dare’s first album, we
didn’t even have a Record Deal when we wrote it…I’d just started working with a
great young guitarist from Oldham, Vinny Burns, an amazingly talented player
who just happened to a big fan of Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore and players like Neal
Schon, so the transition of leaving Lizzy very natural to me; so we were just
writing songs that felt right for us as a new band. So now 2016 having Vinny
back on lead guitar has been very exciting for me, and It’s also great to be
working with Nigel Clutterbuck again on bass who is an awesome talent…..his
power and stage presence really compliments Keven Whitehead’s killer drumming.
It’s crucial to work with players you like and respect, who play from the
heart, we don’t follow trends, we all have belief in what we do and more
importantly stay true to ourselves as musicians.
Time we say Goodbye”, “On My Own”, fueron escritas en la carretera, a veces en
What's your inspiration when making your songs?... Are you satisfied your expectations with your last album “Sacred Ground”? What do you expect from this album?
Over the
last few years I have been away from home quite a lot touring with Thin Lizzy
and DARE. So songs like Home, Every Time we say Goodbye, On My Own…. were
written on the road, sometimes in empty, lonely hotel rooms. I like to write
with images, like painting with music, and where I live in North Wales UK, it
is a very inspiring scenery, mountains, valleys, rivers, so I do get a lot of
inspiration from my surroundings. With Sacred Ground, It was so great to be
working with Vinny again. Having Vinny’s range of style, soaring guitars in my
mind, It’s a ‘no brainer’ when you know you have such a great guitarist to work
with, you instinctively mould the songs that will compliment that style of
playing….and it just felt right to get the guitars louder. Every band obviously
hopes their albums will do well, so we’ve been overwhelmed at the response to
‘Sacred Ground’ We’ve been number #1 now in the Amazon Rock charts in four
Countries, so myself and all the band are very proud and happy that our DARE
fans have stuck with us, and made the album a success. We all started this
journey together, and I really feel that all our Facebook friends are like a
big family…amazing!
¿Qué vamos a poder
ver y disfrutar en vuestros conciertos en vivo?
What do we will see and enjoy in your live concerts?
We will be
playing songs from all our Dare albums, It will be a long set and will feature
we hope all the favourite DARE songs, I also believe we will have some very
talented Spanish bands with us also, so will be a great night. Mainly I would
like to include the Dare favourite songs, but we’ll also be playing songs from a few of our albums that we’ve
never played live before….
Esta no es tu primera
vez en España. ¿Qué opinas del público español? ¿Qué esperan de ellos esta vez?
This is not your first time in Spain. What do you think about the Spanish crowd? What do expect from them, this time?
We love the
Spanish crowds and audiences, very passionate people, and such a beautiful
country, and one of DARE’s favourite destinations. We hope to play more times,
just looking forward to seeing all our friends again and enjoy an evening of
Dare’s best songs.
¿Cuáles son sus
planes para el próximo año 2017? Obviamente tocar por salas y festivales, pero,
¿algo que puedas adelantar? ¿Algún evento importante?
What are your plans for next year 2017? We assume that you will touring around clubs and festivals. Can you advance anything to us? Any important event?
2017 will
be a very busy year for DARE, we start off in Spain, Barcelona, Pamplona, and
Madrid. Then we play Athens, South Wales, Germany, Holland and Italy. And
somewhere in between all the live shows we will be re-recording a special
anniversary edition of Out Of The Silence…so it will be one hell of a year.
There is also a new studio album in the making, so lots of new music coming
from the DARE camp coming soon.
Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?
We all know
Digital is here to stay. It has revolutionised the way bands can reach their
audience, and more importantly distribute their music. CD’s were great but getting CD’s shipped
worldwide was expensive, and impossible for lesser known bands due to
costs. So having our music available
worldwide to anyone with a phone, ipad, or laptop is amazing. It has opened up
a global market, not just for Dare, but for all bands. These days you don’t even
need a record deal. We have facebook, youtube, all fantastic global platforms
to get your music heard and out there. It’s a big world, and selling and
promoting music via the internet is a the best thing that ever happened for
bands, filmmakers, and any creative people who has something to say or
sell….it’s given us equal opportunities
to reach the world. What’s not to like?
¿Cuál es tu mejor
recuerdo de la música?
What is your best memory about music?
I have so
many great memories; it’s hard to pinpoint just one. Thin Lizzy is just one big
great memory. Working with Phil Lynott was such an honour, and still is playing
alongside Scott Gorham, with the new
lineup. But also getting our first DARE deal with A&M, was amazing. Then we
supported Europe across Europe in front of 10,000 people a night, that’s a
pretty cool too. I know our upcoming shows in Spain will give me and the boys
special memories. And hopefully for the audience too.
¿Cómo es un día
normal en la vida de Dare?
How is a normal day in the life of Dare?
Normal?
What’s that? Ha ha. Since moving to
mountains of North Wales, I built my studio here in my house. So typically when
recording or writing, I usually like to start early in the studio. Around 8 am,
I feel really focussed at that time of day. I will work all day sometimes
losing track of time. Sometimes working late; then back again in the morning.
Couple of days a week I will try and take a long walk in the hills or on the
beach. Problem is I can never really stop working on the songs in my head. So
that can be frustrating having lyrics and melodies floating about in my mind
24/7. But that’s writing albums. Long and tortuous work. When the albums are finished I usually need
a few months off to re-format and defragment my brain.
general?
What do you think about the current economic and social situation in Spain, Europe and in the World in general?
Well that’s
a very complicated question! And one I don’t think I’m qualified to answer. But
I guess it’s at times like this, when we all need some escape from the hardship
and troubles that life can sometimes throw at us. And music can be a great
escape. Giving hope, inspiration and the inner ‘Strength to carry on’ I guess
we all need faith in ourselves and belief, and with that we all get through;
regardless of Politics or religion, it’s who we are inside that carries us.
