Is Tropical - Native to (2011). Entrevista a Is Tropical

eL GRuPo The BaND

Little is known of the members of "Is Tropical", what we discovered surfing the web is that they are a Londoners trio of squatters calling themselves  ☮, ☯ & ∞, and that does synth pop.
"Is Tropical"  appears in public with their faces covered, as well as in promotional photos and video clips and even in live concerts. Everything seems weird around themselves and you cannot remain indifferent.
Genious of the artistic expression; from music, to video and the Internet, as well as in their own concerts.

Native to (2011) is the first album by Is Tropical.
Their style of electronic music is synth pop, it is very original, and different.
Her video clips are a visual provocation, we generated reactions ranging from sexual arousal to the brutal hatred, but you never goes remain indiferent.

Is Tropical - Native to (2011)

"Native to (2011)" contains controversial hits like "The Greek", or the fantastic experience sound  of "South Pacific", and the new single "Lies" whose video is seeding already all types of comments in all social networks  . Still, "Native to (2011)" has at least one hit per topic, "Land of the Nod", "Clouds" ... Magnificent album!

Why the name "Is Tropical"?
For us the name is about escapism, getting our heads out of the cold, dark London winter in which we formed the band. A lot of our early songs reflected the same urge to daydream about places we'd never been, rather than the mundane things you see and experience daily.

The Music of "Is Tropical" reminds me to the sound of the eighties years, and some current groups like The Wombats, Crystal Castles...What are your musical influences?
We have a lot of different influences, from hip hop to electronic music. When we write songs, we try rip off any kind of track that has that classic element to it. Frankie Valli and Daft Punk could be next to one another on our tour van playlists. New bands that we're into recently are PEACE, Crystal Fighters, Beach Fossils, Toy… the list goes on. The most important thing is music that makes you feel something, and that could be Brian May shredding with an afro all the way to Tinariwen playing desert-blues powered by car batteries. S'ALL GOOD.

Is Tropical - Lies (2012)

In your first album, Native To (2012), you surprised us with a minimalist and retro sound. How do you define your music?
I don't think it would be a good thing to define our music this early… we've never really thought too far ahead in planning the kind of music we would make. The early demos sound completely different to what ended up on the album. and we're only interested in looking forwards. Our favourite song is always the one we've just written. I don't think we worry too much about being too derivative of old timeless bands, in the same way it's probably not possible to know 100% that you're creating the next big movement in music. That's not a fun thing to be concerned about, really.

I think this is your first concert in Spain, what are you going to offer in your live concerts? What do you hope from the Spanish audience in your shows?
We've actually played before in Spain, once at a tiny festival last year on the beach which was great - it was in someone's back garden and even though we were a really new band we had a great slot. Afterwards loads of people went swimming and there was an accident involving a jellyfish and someone's face. The other time we played was in Razzmatazz, which is really cool but you have to be on a serious one to go on stage at Really hard not to be steaming drunk by then, tbh.

¿Por qué tituláis Native To a vuestro primer disco?

Why you titled "Native To" to your first disc?
It was a nice sounding phrase from a book about world masks we had found somewhere. The thing about the name is that we didn't want something that sounded like a manifesto, but something that suited the name and the fact that most of the songs we had recorded were about different countries, fictional or non-fictional. Native seemed like an interesting word and was a concept that probably permeated into the whole record. And it was probably the only thing we all agreed on.

Do you have any surprise or any alternative plans the 2012 tour? Can you anticipate anything to us?
Yes we are all going to jump out of a big birthday cake at some point and surprise everyone. Also at another time in the year we will offer someone chewing gum that will give them a small electric shock.

Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?
The digital revolution has totally reinvigorated the music industry. Smaller artists and home production has become the new paradigm - you don't have to have a £500,000 record deal in order to produce and tour an album any more. It's great that the playing-field has been leveled like that, but it only means that individual artists have to work harder to keep the attention of their fan base. The drawback of the digital consumption of music is that it's sometimes treated as disposable -- that's something the music industry still doesn't know quite how to deal with… Whatever though, the internet rules and if you're really passionate about making music and getting heard you will find a way to do it no matter what.

What is your best memory about music?
The first time we got played on the radio was awesome, we were all in someone's living room and it was pretty exciting… a lot of people rang us to say they had heard it and that was probably the first moment our parents didn't secretly think we were total losers. The radio is still such a big deal, it has a magic about it hearing yourself on there. Long live radio.

Have you heard of the #15-M or also called the #Spanish-revolution? What do you think about it?
It's hard learning about foreign domestic issues sometimes but the 15-M movement seems like an important part of something which is going on all over the world, all of the time. It's just a shame that the only large-scale political demonstrations happen just because of Facebook. Just like OWS in America, there was an element of exhibitionism in the digital coverage and the overly twitterified language that made it seem more like a flash-mob than a serious political issue. It's important not to be trivialized when you're trying to say something serious, and the media had a field day overstating the links between social networks and the London Riots last year, for example. The guy from KONY learnt this lesson the hard way, and look where that got him.

¿Podríais decirnos...
Could you tell us about...

... A book? Uh. There's a great book called A History Of Art (1997) by Gonbrich, which is big enough to fit in a decent coat's pocket, but manages to cover the entirety of art history, from the Neolithic cave paintings all the way to the present day. It's like the ultimate show-off's Argos Catalogue. Great to read on the plane.

Una película?: Emmanuelle in Space (1994) de Emmanuelle Arsan.
... A movie? Emmanuelle in Space (1994) by Emmanuelle Arsan.

…Una canción?: Jealous Guy (1985) de John Lennon. Temazo!
... A song? John Lennon - Jealous Guy. Tune!

…Un album?: El último álbum de The Macabees, Given to the wild (2012), definitivamente vale la pena escuchar si no lo has hecho. Ese grupo sigue mejorando.
... An album? The latest Maccabees album, Given to the Wild (2012), is definitely worth a listen if you haven't already. That band keeps getting better.

... A group or soloist?: There's an awesome Malian singer from back in the day, called Na Hawa Doumbia. The label http://www.awesometapes.com/ has released some of her stuff, because they are a great label to find weird stuff like that.

Thank you very much. Best wishes from Spain.
You're welcome from IS TROPICAL land.
