Kælan Mikla son un
trío de Punk/No-Wave procedente de Reykjavík, Islandia, repletas de oscuridad y
profundidad.
escena Sinth-punk femenina Isandesa.
Formadas
THE INTERVIEW
Your songs sound
like intensive and elegant and darknes Pop mixed with Punk, Rock and Sinth, and
a bit of Glam. A great mix of styles that results on the fantastic sound of
your music now. So, what really are your musical influences?
It´s
really hard to say because we all have different taste in music and our own
unique inputs. We could say that Sólveig brings the melodies with her beautiful
synth lines, Maggý brings the punk with her heavy bass strumming and Laufey
brings the weirdness that ties it together with her vocal expressions. But we
all share the love for beauty in sadness and that has always been the main
subject of our music.
Next year marks 5
years since Kælan Mikla was
formed like a band. What is the difference between the music of Kaelan Mikla
today and your music 5 years ago?
We
started out as a single act at a poetry competition with no intentions of
making more songs but after winning the competition we started creating punk
music and playing shows in 2013, then in 2015 Sólveig who was our drum player
switched to synths and a drum machine and our sound evolved a lot, even though
we still try to keep the punk element going in a way.
You edited your
last LP titled "Mánadans
(2013-2014)" in April 2017. What do you expect from this album?
Nothing
much, but we hope people will listen to it and enjoy it. We released this album
mostly for our fans that have followed us since the beginning and for our
selves. It is a cassette containing a collection of our first songs, many that
we never released before. But we are very proud of it and cherish it a lot even
though we don´t play these songs live any more. We hope everyone will listen to
it and like it as much as we do.
What do we will
see and enjoy in your live concerts for next tour around Spain?
We
will be playing almost all the Kælan Mikla album that was released on Fabrika
records in 2016 as well as a few songs from our next album that we are working
on right now.
What are your
plans for this year 2017 and next 2018? We assume that you will touring around
clubs and festivals. Can you advance anything to us? Any important event?
Our
festivals this year include Young and Cold in Germany, Return to the bat cave
in Poland and Iceland Airwaves.
We
are also recording our next album and plan to release a new music video this
year. Next year we are already planning a possible tour with an amazing band
from the US.
Do you think the
digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the
future of music?
We
think music has probably never been better than today with endless choices to
listen to and the internet to discover more music and for bands to get in touch
with each other. A lot of old media to play music is making a comeback like
cassettes and vinyls and even CD´s. People seem to want to pay for music and
that is good for the artists.
What is your best
memory about music?
Probably
all the times that we played together as Kælan Mikla, it is the best thing that
we do and we are so lucky to be able to play all these amazing shows together.
It´s always true magic when we go on stage with each other.
How is a normal
day in the life of Kælan Mikla?
Well,
it depends on if we are touring or not. Most of the time we live in separate
countries, Laufey lives in Iceland but Sólveig and Maggý live in Berlin. We
depend a lot on the internet to share ideas and work on music separately even
though it can be hard. When we go touring we are mostly just travelling and
playing but we always make sure to have some fun days together in between
because after all we are just best friends.
What do you think
about the current economic and social situation in Spain, Iceland, Europe and
World in general?
We
care a lot about environmental and animal welfare as well as the importance of
social equality and helping refugees and those in need. We think there is
always room for improvement.
