EL GRUPO

The Primitives es una banda británica de indie pop de Coventry, muy conocida por su éxito internacional Crash (1988). Formada en 1985, la banda, se disolvió en 1991 y ha vuelto a juntarse en 2009 con dos de sus miembros presentes durante toda su carrera discográfica, la vocalista Tracy Tracy, y el guitarrista Paul Court, y el baterista Tig Williams que lleva en la banda desde 1988. Tras la reunión de 2009, hasta la fecha, el grupo se completa con el bajista Raph Moore.

The Primitives are a British indie pop band from Coventry, best known for their 1988 international hit single "Crash". Formed in 1985, disbanded in 1991 and reformed in 2009, the band's two constants throughout their recording career have been vocalist Tracy Tracy and guitarist Paul Court. Drummer Tig Williams has been a constant since 1988, and the reformed (2009-present) line-up is completed by bassist Raph Moore.


EL DISCO

El nuevo disco de The Primitives, Echoes and Rhymes (2012), es una propuesta tremendamente llamativa. Todos los temas seleccionados son versiones de grupos oscuros de los años sesenta liderados por chicas. Pero curiosamente el disco dista mucho de adolecer de dispersión, los británicos han sabido impregnar de su eléctrica personalidad a cada uno de los temas de este maravilloso disco, apropiándose de estas composiciones con una urgencia y una energía sorprendentes, pero consiguiendo rescatar la esencia maravillosa de unas melodías nacidas en la década que más deliciosamente las cultivó. 

The new album by The Primitives, Echoes and Rhymes (2012), is a tremendously appealing proposal. All topics are selected versions of shadowy groups of the sixties led by girls. Oddly, this album is far from dispersion, the British have managed to impregnate his electric personality to each of the themes of this marvellous album, appropriating these compositions with urgency and an amazing energy, but rescuing the essence of melodies born in the decade they grew more delightfully.

El resultado es un álbum tremendamente adictivo, aderezado con un halo sixtie que funciona como reivindicación y nos lleva directamente a investigar cada uno de los (en algunos casos) poco conocidos nombres que pueblan su minutaje.

The result is a highly addictive album, seasoned with a halo from the sixties that works as a claim and leads directly to investigate each of the (sometimes) little-known names on it.

There are wonderful songs like Turn Off The Moon (played by Sue Lyon in the legendary film Lolita ,1962, by Kubrick), Sunshine In My Rainy Mind (Polly Niles), I'm Not Sayin 'Nico, Till You Say You'll Be Mine (Jackie DeShannon), The Witch (Adam & Eve), I Surrender (Bonnie St Claire), Who Are You Trying To Fool? (Little Anne), or Wild Flower (The She Trinity).

From garage to psychedelia, from soul to sunshine pop, multiple styles come together in a kind of special collection, reedited with the love and energy of The Primitives. ¿Por qué el nombre The Primitives?

Fue tomado de una banda de pre-Velvet, Lou Reed. Más tarde descubrimos que un montón de bandas tenían el nombre, a menudo, como un nombre momentáneo antes de que se les ocurriera algo mejor, en nuestro caso decidimos mantenerlo.

Why the name "The Primitives"?

It was taken from a pre-Velvets Lou Reed band. We later discovered lots of bands had the name, often as a first name before they came up with something better, but we decided to keep it.

Al parecer, The Primitives estaba destinado a la extinción definitiva en 1994, con la publicación de los álbumes Bombshell - The Hits & More y luego en 1996 Best of The Primitives, y especialmente cuando Steve Dullaghan abandonó el grupo en 2009. Sin embargo, 20 años después, aparece Echoes and Rhymes, un álbum con nuevas canciones. ¿Qué han estado haciendo los demás miembros de The Primitives en estos 20 años?

It seemed that "The Primitives" was destined to extinction definitely in 1994 when the albums "Bombshell - The Hits & More" and later in 1996 "Best of The Primitives" were released, and especially when Steve Dullaghan left the in 2009. However, 20 years later, appears "Echoes and Rhymes", an album with new songs.

What the other members of The Primitives have been doing in these 20 years?

Graphic design and arts and crafts type things. Tracy has been involved in running and promoting various club nights and has lived in different countries.

En este último disco, Echoes and Rhymes, nos sorprendéis con un estilo pop rock, mezclado con el pop rock fresco de siempre de The Primitives, y la introducción de nuevos sonidos, tal vez inspirado en los años 60 y 80 ¿Qué nos puedes decir sobre eso?

Elegimos canciones que parecían tener algún elemento de The Primitives y luego tratamos de hacerlas sonar completamente como nuestras propias canciones.

In your latest album, “Echoes and Rhymes”, you surprise us with a pop rock style, mixed with the fresh pop rock you have ever done. You have introduced new sounds, maybe inspired in the 60s or 80s. What can you tell us about that?

We chose songs that seemed to have some element of the Primitives within them and we then tried to make them sound completely like our own songs.

Según el estilo en álbumes recientes, las influencias del pop son menos intensas y habéis recibido críticas por ello ¿Qué puedes decirnos de ello?

Hemos trabajado con los mismos principios de siempre. A veces con sonidos más ruidosos otras con sonidos más suaves, y siempre con la voz clara y audible. The influences of pop are less intense in recent albums and you have been criticised for this. What can you tell us about your style?

We worked with exactly the same principles as always. Sometimes fuzz and noise, sometimes more gentle sounds, and always with the voice clear and audible. We were never interested in hiding the vocal under the music, because in all classic rock, that has stood the test of time, whether it be 60s or Punk or whatever you can hear the singer properly.

¿Qué piensas de ser conocidos por éxitos como "Crash"?

What do you think about being known by hits like "Crash"?

Crash is very useful, because it was a big hit and it brings people to us, who can then discover that there is more to The Primitives than just that song. It’s nice to have one song that is now an all time classic.

¿Qué será diferente en esta gira por todo el mundo?

No estamos de gira por el mundo. Tenemos algunas fechas en el Reino Unido y estaremos en España en verano. Podemos ir a Japón y me gustaría tocar en EE.UU. de nuevo.

What will be different on this tour around the world?

We are not touring the world. We have some UK dates and will be back in Spain in the summer. We may go to Japan and would like to play the US again.

En cuanto a vuestra agenda de conciertos ¡no tenéis fechas libres en mayo! más tarde ¿estaréis ocupados de nuevo? ¿Cómo es estar siempre de viaje? ¿Cuándo encontráis tiempo para vosotros, para relajaros o para seguir componiendo?

No estamos tan ocupados normalmente. Ahora lo estamos por el nuevo álbum y la gira por Reino Unido.

Looking at your concert schedule, you have no free dates in May! What about the following months? How is always travelling? When do you find time for yourself to relax or to continue composing?

We’re not that busy normally. At the moment we are, because of the album and Uk tour.

¿Tienes alguna sorpresa en esta gira de 2012? ¿Podéis anticiparnos algo?

Habrá un par de videos realizados para las canciones del álbum. Uno de ellos será un cortometraje, en el que puede que no salgamos. Nos gustaría sacar un trabajo en soporte físico con temas nuevos. Por el momento, es todo sobre el álbum. Una vez que el panorama esté más tranquilo decidiremos lo que, en todo caso, haremos a continuación.

Do you have any surprises for the 2012 tour? Can you anticipate anything to us?

There will be a couple of more videos made for songs off the album. One will be a short film that may not have us in it. We would like to put out another physical release with some new tracks. At the moment it’s all about the album. Once this has died down we will decide what, if anything, to do next.

¿Crees que el mundo digital terminará con la música tal como la conocemos hoy en día? ¿Cual crees que es el futuro de la música?

Creo que la gente siempre va a querer algo físico propio o tener una experiencia real, es decir, ver el trabajo de una banda o un músico en vivo. A través del mundo digital es más fácil que la gente sepa acerca de las cosas. No creo que The Primitives pudiera estar de vuelta haciendo todo esto, sin Internet. Creo que el mundo digital puede extender carreras musicales y los intereses de la gente en la música.

Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?

I think people will always want to own something physical or to have a real experience i.e. seeing a band or musician play live. The digital world makes it easier to let people know about things. I don’t think The Primitives could be back together doing this, without the internet. I think that the digital world can extend musical careers and people’s interest in music.

¿Cuál es tu mejor recuerdo de la música?

Cuando era más joven, al oír cosas como The Velvet Underground, por primera vez. Sigo teniendo esa sensación de descubrir algo antiguo y olvidado, y luego rastrearlo en vinilo. Acabo de comprar un 45 que estuve rondando durante un iempo... El cover de Susan Barret del tema ‘It’s No Secret’  de Jefferson Airplane. Comprar canciones raras y geniales en vinilo de 7" me produce la misma sensación que cuando escuché por primera vez VU, el punk, etc.

What is your best memory about music?

When I was younger, hearing things like “The Velvet Underground” for the first time. I still get that feeling from discovering something old and forgotten about, and then tracking it down on vinyl. I just bought a 45 I’d been after for a while...Susan Barret’s cover of Jefferson Airplane’s ‘It’s No Secret’. Buying great and rare tunes on 7” vinyl gives me the same buzz as when I heard the VU and punk etc for the first time.

¿Has oído hablar del movimiento #15-M o también llamado #Spanish-revolution? ¿Qué piensas al respecto?

Sí, las protestas masivas contra el sistema de gobierno y la banca provocado por el alto desempleo. Similar a los movimientos del Reino Unido y los EE.UU.. Creo que es justo que la gente lo haga. Es la mejor manera de mostrar su ira y no puede ser ignorada. Esperemos que algún cambio venga, después de todo esto.

Have you heard of the #15-M o also called the #Spanish-revolution? What do you think about it?

Yes, mass protests against the government and banking system triggered by high unemployment. Similar in ways to the occupy movements in the UK and US. I think it’s right that people should be doing this. It’s the best way to show their anger and can’t be ignored. Hopefully some change will come everywhere after all this.
