EL GRUPO

Hace ya más de una década (en 1998) que se plantó la semilla de The Wave Pictures.

Desde entonces el trío británico no ha parado: su ritmo discográfico avanza a razón de casi un álbum por año; sin olvidar que también han ido dando salida a gran cantidad de singles, EPs, rarezas y material oficioso) y su ritmo de directos es frenético.

Con la guitarra y la voz de David Tattersall al frente, juegan hoy a lo que Modern Lovers en su día o, conjugando los verbos más en presente, a lo que luego han jugado también Herman Düne y Hefner, sus padrinos oficiales -en España los descubrimos cuando nos visitaron en 2008 haciéndole de banda a Darren Hayman, líder de Hefner-. No es casual, sino todo lo contrario, que Hayman firme la producción de su último trabajo hasta la fecha, "Beer In The Breakers" (2011). Con la etiqueta del pop lo-fi como afable sambenito, nunca reniegan de la máxima que coloca la actitud por delante de la técnica y andan siempre vacunados contra la moda. Pasan los años y siguen siendo los mismos gamberros socarrones, solo que sonando más clásicos.

City Forgiveness (2014)

Por todos es conocida la admiración que The Wave Pictures sienten por Daniel Johnston. Sin ir más lejos, solo había que escuchar la devoción con que los británicos versionaban su canción “My Life Is Starting Over” durante su última gira entre nosotros, a finales del pasado año. Pues bien, esa admiración la van a llevar más lejos todavía con el tour que ofrecerán el mes de julio, incluido en el ciclo We Used To Party, y en el que tocarán entero el disco “Artistic Vice”, uno de los más celebrados del estadounidense.

 

Publicado en 1991, el álbum, el primero que formalmente hizo Daniel poniéndose al frente de una banda, está considerado una de las cimas de su carrera. Combina cierta tosquedad exterior, con aire despeinado, y una asombrosa accesibilidad interior, un yin yang que es también una de las características principales, de las virtudes, de The Wave Pictures. De manera que el repertorio les encaja a la perfección, tanto en su faceta de celebración rockera, caso del tema que lo abre y arriba citado o en el de la muy emblemática en la trayectoria de Johnson “I Killed The Monster”, como en la orientación que tiene “I Know Casper”, ese garage virado hacia el folk que tan bien se les da. Convencidos estamos de que el trío que comanda David Tattersall bordará estos arrebatos de inocencia inestable, que parecen zapatos fabricados para sus pies. Arrebatos que en definición de su propio autor, sin cortarse un pelo, son como “Bob Dylan encontrándose con The Beatles”. Os recordamos también que el ciclo We Used To Party -ese en el que un artista interpreta al completo un disco ajeno por el que profesa especial admiración, uno de esos que le habría gustado firmar- va a ofrecer dos giras más durante los próximos meses: la de Neil Halstead enfrentándose al disco de debut de The Velvet Underground, el del plátano, del 12 al 22 de marzo, y la de Josh Rouse & The Long Vacations, que recuperarán otro primer disco histórico, el homónimo de Violent Femmes, entre el 23 de abril y el 9 de mayo.

¿Por qué el nombre de The Wave Pictures?

Tomamos nuestro nombre de un libro que me dieron mis padres un año por Navidad. Se llamaba' 'Art Now''. Era un pequeño libro de bolsillo sobre artistas modernos. En él, había un capítulo sobre una artista llamado Zoe Leonard. Ella había creado una serie de fotografías llamada'' Wave Pictures'' que fue lo que dio nombre a la banda. No es que fuéramos fans de ella, ni siquiera me gustó ese libro en particular. Es sólo que suena bien. No es una historia muy emocionante, pero esa es la verdad. De ahí es donde viene el nombre. Nos lamamos así desde  hace tanto tiempo que el nombre no tiene absolutamente ningún significado para mí, ¡es sólo como nos llaman!

Why the name The Wave Pictures?

We took our name from a book that my parents gave me for Christmas one year. It was called ''Art Now''. It was a little paperback book about modern artists. In it, there was a chapter on an artist called Zoe Leonard. She created a series of photographs called ''Wave Pictures'' which gave us our band name. It's not that we were fans of her or even that I liked that book especially. It just sort of sounded right. It's not a very exciting story, but that's the truth. That's where the name comes from. We've been called that for so long that the name has absolutely no meaning to me, it's just what we are called!

Las canciones de The Wave Pictures suena a Rock, a Folk, y obviamente a Pop. Una curiosa mezcla de estilos cuyo resultado es el exquisito sonido de vuestra música ¿Cuáles son realmente vuestras influencias musicales?

Escuchamos muchas cosas y tomamos todo lo que podamos de donde podamos. Supongo que las mayores influencias en la banda son los grupos de los 60 como The Rolling Stones y The Kinks, y también algunas cosas de los 70, como los Ramones, Television y Jonathan Richman. Todos escuchamos un montón de blues y el rock and roll, música de los años 50 - T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker, que tiene que ver con el sentimiento y la musicalidad. En realidad no podemos tocar tan bien como otras personas, pero sin duda nos inspiran mucho.

Como compositor, el tema “The Natural Bridge'' de Silver Jews fue una gran influencia para mí.

Afectó a mi manera de pensar acerca de lo que una canción puede hacer. Una vez más, no puedo escribir cosas tan interesantes como David Berman, pero es algo inspirador.

The songs of The Wave Pictures sounds to Rock, to Folk, and obviously to Pop, a curious mix of styles that results in the exquisite sound of your music, what really are your musical influences?

We listen to loads of things and take whatever we can from wherever we can. I suppose the biggest influences on the band are the 60s groups like The Rolling Stones and The Kinks, and also 70s things like the Ramones, Television and Jonathan Richman. We all listen to loads of blues and rock and roll, music from the 50s – T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker, which is all about feeling and musicianship. We can't really play as well as those people, but it certainly inspires us a lot. As for songwriting, ''The Natural Bridge'' by the Silver Jews was a really big influence on me. It affected the way I thought about what lyrics could do. Again, I can't write as interesting stuff as David Berman, but it's something to aspire to.

¿Por qué tituláis “City Forgiveness” a vuestro nuevo disco?

El título lo soñé. Es la única vez que he soñado con algo útil. Me desperté y lo escribí, y luego me volví a dormir de nuevo.

Why you titled "City Forgiveness" to your new disc?

The title came to me in a dream. It's the only time that anything useful has ever come to me in a dream. I woke up, and wrote it down, and then went back to sleep again.

Algo ha cambiado desde los discos anteriores, ¿qué es diferente en “City Forgiveness”?

Tenemos algunos grandes invitados especiales en City Forgiveness: nuestro compañero Dom tocando como una segunda batería en algunas pistas. ¡Ese fue un gran día! Dos bateristas tocando al mismo tiempo! ¡Caos! También hicimos un montón de canciones con Paul Rains de Allo Darlin - es un gran guitarrista. Y lo hicimos algunas con Stanley Brinks, muchos talento y siempre un gran creativo, es simplemente genial estar a su lado ¡Fue muy divertido!

Something has changed from previous albums, who is different in “City Forgiveness”?

We have some great special guests on City Forgiveness: our mate Dom playing a whole second drum kit on some tracks. That was a great day! Two drummers playing at the same time! Chaos! We also did a bunch of tracks with Paul Rains from Allo Darlin – he's a great guitar player. And we did some with Stanley Brinks, who is always so creative and talented and just brilliant to be around. It was a lot of fun!

Doce discos y 16 años en la carretera. Muchas cosas han pasado en este tiempo para The Wave Pictures ¿Alguna anécdota curiosa que nos puedas contar?

No tengo miedo - los músicos tienen un dicho: '' Lo que pasa en la gira se queda en la gira''.

12 albums and 16 years on the road. Many things have happened at this time to The Wave Pictures. Any anecdote you can tell us?

I'm afraid not – musicians have a saying: ''what happens on tour stays on tour''.

Vais a empezar una gira por Europa ¿Qué vais a ofrecer en vivo, y qué esperáis del público en vuestros espectáculos?

Franic Rozycki ha estado tocando algunos bajos realmente increíble últimamente. Cada espectáculo que hace algo nuevo que me impresiona. Él es muy creativo y un bajista de lo más original. No puedo creer que lo hace cada show - cada show me sorprende! Usted debe mirar hacia fuera para que en los shows.

You will start a new tour around Europe. What are you going to offer in your live concert, and what do you hope from the public in your shows?

Franic Rozycki has been playing some really amazing bass lately. Every show he does something new that impresses me. He is very creative and a really original bass player. I can't believe that he does it every show – every show he surprises me! You should watch out for that at the shows.

¿Hay alguna sorpresa o planes alternativos para vuestra gira de 2014?, ¿algo que podáis anticiparnos?

En la actualidad m estamos grabando un álbum y ¡va a ser grande cuando esté terminado! Por ahoar es muy muy divertido. Nos lo vamos a pasar muy bien en el estudio de grabación. Estará muy pronto. ¡Así lo espero al menos!

Do you have any surprise or any plans alternative to this tour for 2014? Can you anticipate anything to us?

We're recording an album at the moment and it's going to be great when it's finished! It's really really fun at the moment. We're having a lot of fun in the recording studio. That'll be out soon. I hope it will anyway!

¿Pensáis que el mundo digital va a acabar con el mundo de la música tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día? Cuál es el futuro del músico?

Lo que me da mucha pena es que las tiendas de discos luchen por sobrevivir. Ellos venden tan pocos disco en estos días que no pueden pagar ni el alquiler. Desde que era joven me han gustado mucho las tiendas de discos. ¡Incluso me gusta su olor! Cuando The Wave Pictures van de gira buscamos tiendas de discos en cada nueva ciudad a la que vamos. Desafortunadamente, muchas veces las tiendas de discos están cerradas, o puede que no haya ninguna en la ciudad. Loughborough, que era la ciudad más cercana al lugar donde crecí, solía tener cuatro tiendas de discos. Ahora que no tiene ninguna. Me imagino que soy un nostálgico, pero yo no creo que internet, es un buen sustituto para todo. Internet es maravilloso en todo tipo de formas, pero creo que se ha hecho cargado de muchas áreas de la vida. Internet no puede sustituir a las tiendas de discos. Pero si ha puesto a las tiendas de discos fuera de mercado.

Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?

The thing that makes me most sad is that record shops struggle to survive. They sell so few records these days that they can't afford the rent anymore. Ever since I was young I really liked record shops. I even like the smell of them! When The Wave Pictures go on tour we really look forward to checking out the record shops in each new town we go to. Unfortunately, a lot of times the record shops are closed down, or maybe there will be just one left in a town. Loughborough, which was the nearest town to where I grew up, used to have four record shops. Now it doesn't have any. I guess I'm just nostalgic, but I don't think the internet is a good substitute for everything. The internet is wonderful in all sorts of ways, but I think it has taken over in too many areas of life. The internet is no substitute for record shops. But it is putting record shops out of business.

¿Cuál es vuestro mejor recuerdo en el mundo de la música?

Hicimos una excursión de hace unos años donde tocábamos como banda de acompañamiento a Daniel Johnston. Encontré su música muy edificante para tocar. Fue muy divertido tocar sus canciones cada noche. Es un gran recuerdo. Fue un momento muy feliz.

What is your best memory about music?

We did a tour a few years ago where we played as Daniel Johnston's backing band. I just found his music so uplifting to play. It was so much fun playing his songs every night. That's a great memory. It was a really happy time.

¿Qué piensas de la situación económica actual en Europa y en el mundo en general?

Estoy preocupado por Gran Bretaña. Un partido de ultraderecha llamado UKIP se ha hecho muy popular por aquí. Son una partido muy racista. Me temo que esta es una tendencia en toda Europa. Me pregunto si la situación económica, hace que la gente se asuste y tenga miedo, y les haga votar a los partidos más conservadores. Es un momento preocupante.

What do you think about current economic situation in Europe and World in general?

I am worried about Britain. A very right wing party called UKIP has become popular here. They are quite a racist party. I am afraid that this is a trend all over Europe. I wonder if the economic situation makes people scared and the fear makes them vote for more conservative parties. It is a worrying time.

… Un libro?:

Noche Salvaje de Jim Thompson.

Me gusta mucho Jim Thompson. Él escribe thrillers extraños y muy oscuros. Un par de ellos fueron llevadas al cine. Hay dos muy buenas películas de Jim Thompson: Los Timadores (dirigida por Stephen Frears) y La Huída (dirigida por Sam Peckinpah). Se podría tener una idea de lo oscuro y extraño que es Jim Thompson por esas dos películas maravillosas, pero cuando lo lees te das cuenta que era más experimental que la mayoría de los escritores “pulp fiction”. A veces estás leyendo poesía en prosa pura, otras veces es un thriller duro. En particular me gustó Noche Salvaje. Sería una buena idea, empezar a leer este primero. Es genial.

... A book?:

Savage Night by Jim Thompson

 I really like Jim Thompson. He writes these very dark, strange thrillers. A couple of them were made into films. There's two really great films of Jim Thompson: The Grifters (directed by Stephen Frears) and The Getaway (directed by Sam Peckinpah). You would get a sense of how dark and strange Jim Thompson is by those two wonderful films, but when you read him you see how much more experimental he was than most pulp fiction writers. Sometimes you're reading pure prose poetry, other times it's a hard-boiled thriller. I particularly liked ''Savage Night''. That would be a good one to read first. He's great.

Starship Troopers dirigida por Paul Verhoeven.

Este es un muy extraño, largo, película muy oscura, con estos increíbles momentos de belleza en el mismo, también. Es también totalmente kitsch, muy campamento y completamente falso. Es una especie de sólo su propia realidad - es muy postmoderno, sino que también funciona como una película recta. En realidad no es como cualquier otra cosa. Creo que es genial. Así entretenido y divertido. Me encanta Paul Verhoeven: Total Recall, Robocop, Instinto básico ... que hizo tantas películas divertidas!

... A movie?:

Starship Troopers, directed by Paul Verhoeven.

This is a really strange, long, very dark film, with these incredible moments of beauty in it, too. It's also completely kitsch, very camp and completely fake. It's kind of just it's own reality – it's very postmodern but it also works just as a straight film. It's not really like anything else. I think it's great. So entertaining and funny. I love Paul Verhoeven: Total Recall, Robocop, Basic Instinct... he made so many fun movies!

Be My Baby de The Ronettes
El otro día estaba en un bar y sonó Be My Baby de The Ronettes en la máquina de discos. Simplemente,¡no hay nada mejor que es canción! La intro es tan grande y todo es tan melodramático y en movimiento. ¡Es un poco Kitsch pero increíblemente emocional al mismo tiempos. Es sólo una de esas canciones que me pongo solo, no importa cuántas veces la escuche, siempre me encantará.

Be My Baby de The Ronettes

The other day i was in a bar and ''be my baby'' by the ronettes came on the jukebox. There's just nothing better than that song! The intro is so great and it's all so melodramatic and moving. It's a little bit kitsch but just incredibly emotional at the same time. It's just one of those songs that gets me every single, it doesn't matter how often i hear it, i always respond to it.

Leave Home de The Ramones.

El último disco que he escuchado ha sido  ' Leave Home'' de los Ramones. ¡Es un gran álbum! Hay  muchas canciones divertidas, entre ellas su excelente versión de' California Sun'. Contiene parte de su mejor repertorio: Oh Oh I Love Her So, I Remember You, Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment. Siempre me gustó la voz de Joey Ramone, que es una especie de un cantante ridículo, pero él todavía mantiene el tipo en movimiento. Pone un falso acento británico, lo cual es muy inusual porque los cantantes británicos ¡suelen poner en acento americano!

Leave Home by The Ramones

The last album I listened to was ''Leave Home'' by The Ramones. That's a great album! So many fun songs, including their excellent cover version of ''California Sun''. It's got a lot of their best stuff on it:   Oh Oh I Love Her So, I Remember You, Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment. I always liked Joey Ramone's voice, he is a sort of a ridiculous singer but he's still kind of moving. He does a fake British accent, which is very unusual because usually British singers put on American accents!

….Un grupo o solista?:

Barbecue Bob.

Últimamente, algo que últimamente me gusta es un CD llamado Chocolate to the Bones de Barbecue Bob . Barbecue Bob era muy popular en los años 30. Era un cantante de blues, pero con con el estilo de un humorista. En su día era mucho más popular que Blind Willie McTell o Leadbelly, pero la historia no ha sido especialmente amable con él. No es exactamente ¡un nombre muy famoso! No se suele mencionar cuando se habla de los grandes cantantes de blues. Hay algo de humildad en lo que hace. Su música es muy simpe, casi inocente. Pero cuanto más lo escuchaba, más me daba cuenta de lo fuerte y el músico tan brillantemente inteligente que era Barbecue Bob. El primer corte del álbum se llama ''Motherless Chile Blues''. Tienes que escucharlo. Es una de las más canciones más bellas que he escuchado. De alguna manera, el sonido, la voz y la parte de guitarra son muy sencillas, solo hacen de este ideal, poco todo misterioso. ¡Esa canción es como un sueño! El CD ''Chocolate To The Bone'' creo que merece la pena tenerlo. Es una brillante colección de canciones. Tengo que decirlo ¡soy fan Barbecue Bob!

... A group or soloist?:

Barbecue Bob.

Lately, something that I really like is a cd called ''Chocolate to the Bone'' by Barbecue Bob. Barbecue Bob was very popular in the 30s. He was a blues singer, but with kind of a humourous, gentle style. In his day he was much more popular than Blind Willie McTell or Leadbelly, but history hasn't been especially kind to him. He's not exactly a very famous name! He doesn't get mentioned when they talk about the great blues singers. There's something kind of humble about what he does. It's very simple, almost innocent music. But the more I listened to it the more I realised what a strong and brilliantly intelligent musician Barbecue Bob was. The first track on the album is called ''Motherless Chile Blues''. You've got to hear it: it's one of the most beautiful pieces of music that I've ever heard. Somehow the sound and his voice and the really simple guitar part just make this perfect, mysterious little whole. It's like a dream, that song! The whole ''Chocolate To The Bone'' cd is worth getting, though, in my opinion. It's such a brilliant collection. I have to say, I'm a Barbecue Bob fan!
