The Brew encara
el nuevo año que marca sus 10 años sobre los escenarios como les gusta hacerlo,
tocando en directo, en la continuación de su gira “Control Tour” en la la banda sigue presentando las canciones de su último
disco “Control” (2014), editado en febrero del 2014,
y considerado por la crítica y público como el mejor de los cinco trabajos que
tiene editados hasta la fecha la banda británica de Grimsby.

Control (2014)
Las canciones de “Control” dejan entrever el amor del
grupo por los sonidos Hard Rock, el Rock Progresivo e incluso la Psicodelia originarios
de los sesenta y setenta, pero con la fuerza del Rock del siglo XXI, una evolución
y madurez que se nota en la seguridad del grupo consciente de su gran momento
como músicos y de sus canciones. Tanto es así, que la banda se atreve a grabar
los temas del álbum en directo en el mismo estudio, y como resultado este LP “Control”,
un disco honesto, compacto y de sonido crudo y visceral, con 10 temas directos,
intensos y poderosos de alta carga energética, que trasmiten grandes dosis de esa
pasión y electricidad, que solo un concierto en directo te puede trasmitir.
En Febrero de 2015, The
Brew vuelven a España para celebrar sus 10 años de carrera y presentar su
nuevo álbum en una extensa gira por 16 ciudades, y podrás comprobar la fuerza
de su directo. No hay excusa para no verles, como puedes ver, los vas a tener
muy cerquita de tu casa.

Hemos tenido la oportunidad de hablar sobre “Control”
y su gira “Control Tour” con Jason
Barwick (guitarra eléctrica y voz principal), Kurtis
Smith (bateria), y Tim Smith (al
bajo eléctrico y segunda voz), y esta fue la conversación que mantuvimos con The Brew.

¿Por qué el nombre de
The Brew?
TIM SMITH:
Originalmente nos llamábamos Strange Brew, pero en el momento en que firmábamos
por la casa discográfica sentimos que sonaba como un nombre tributo a Cream banda
británica 60's, y como, de todas formas, todo el mundo nos llamada habitualmente
The Brew, decidimos cambiarnos el nombre por el de The Brew.
Why the name The Brew?
Tim Smith: Originally
we were called Strange Brew, but at the time we got signed by record label they
felt it sounded like a tribute band name of the 60´s british band Cream, and
everybody used call us The Brew anyway, so we change the name to The Brew
Las canciones de The
Brew suenan a Rock Clásico, a Blues y a Hard Rock. Una curiosa mezcla de
estilos que se convierte en el exquisito sonido de vuestra música. Pero,
¿cuáles son realmente vuestras influencias musicales?
KURTIS SMITH: Bueno,
como puedes suponer, bandas como The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink
Floyd han tenido una enorme influencia en nuestro sonido. Pero también muchas
bandas de los últimos años como Wolfmother, Kula Shaker, Tame Impala, The
Raconteurs han desempeñado su papel.
The songs of The Brew sounds to Classic Rock,
to Blues and Hard Rock. A curious mix of styles that results in the exquisite
sound of your music, what really are your musical influences?
Kurtis Smith: Well, as you would expect bands like The Who,
Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelín, Pink Floyd have had a massive influence on our
sound. But many bands in recent years like Wolfmother, Kula Shaker, Tame
Impala, The Raconteurs have also played their part
Este año se cumplen
10 años desde vuestra creación. ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre la música de The
Brew hoy y vuestra música hace 10 años?
TIM SMITH:Creo que la principal diferencia es que la música
ha evolucionado y ha crecido. Si escuchas los primeros álbumes, puedes oír la
dirección en la que íbamos. Los mismos riff impulsaban las canciones en una conducción
que nos encantaba tocar entonces y que todavía están presentes en los álbumes actuales,
como en el nuevo “Control”. Así que no sé, que si hay realmente una gran
diferencia entre entonces y ahora. Que la gente diga que tenemos un sonido
característico, es una buena cosa, creo que al menos esto nos diferencia de
otras bandas.
This year marks 10 years since your creation.
What is the difference between the music of The Brew today and your music 10
years ago?
Tim Smith: I
think the main difference is that the music has evolved and grown. If you listen
to the early albums, you can hear the direction we were doing. the same riff
driven driving songs that we loved to play then are still present on the albums
of today such like the new release in Control. So I don't know that there is
really a big difference between then and now, People say we have a signature
sound which is a good thing, I think at least this identifies us from other
bands.
¿Por qué habéis
titulado "Control" a vuestro último disco? ¿Qué vamos a encontrar
diferente en este CD de otros álbumes anteriores de The Brew?
JASON BARWICK: Este
álbum da una sensación de ser crudo. Nos propusimos captar la energía que producimos cada noche en directo sobre el
escenario en un disco. Sin duda, creemos que lo hemos conseguido en el álbum “Control”.
De hecho, todo el álbum fue grabado en directo, todos los temas fueron grabados
en una o dos tomas, ¡y también los solos de guitarra y voces! Es un disco muy enérgico.
Why you titled "Control” to your last
disc? What's we will be finding different in this CD from other previous albums
from The Brew?
Jason Barwick: This album has a very raw feel to it. We
purposely set out to capture the live energy that we produce on stage every
night on an album. We certainly feel that we achieved this on the Control
album. In fact the whole album was recorded live all the tracks were recorded
in one or two takes, as were the guitar solos and vocals! It is a very
energetic album.
Esta no es la primera
vez que actuáis en España, ¿qué vais a ofrecer en vuestros conciertos y qué es
lo que esperáis del público español?
KURTIS SMITH: Este
es el "Control Tour", así que en esta gira contará con canciones del nuevo álbum,
por supuesto, pero aún así, también tocaremos las canciones favoritas de los
fans de discos anteriores. La gente nos dice que el setlist que estamos tocando
en el Control Tour es el conjunto más edificante y podeross que han visto en su
vida de The Brew.
Los fans españoles siempre se involucran tanto con la música
y con la banda ¡que es una locura! Es una de las razones por nos encanta tocar
en España y ¡estamos impacientes por para ellos otra vez!
This is not your first time in concert around
Spain, what are you going to offer in your live concert, and what do you hope
from the Spanish public in your shows?
Kurtis
Smith: This is the Control Tour so this tour
will feature songs from the new album of course, but we still play the
fans favourite songs from previous albums also. People tell us that the set
that we are playing on the control tour is the most uplifting and powerful set
they have ever seen from the Brew.
The Spanish
fans always get so involved with the music and the band they are crazy! It is
one of the reasons we just love playing in Spain so we just looking forward to
playing for them again!
¿Tenéis alguna
sorpresa o algún otro plan para esta gira de 2015? ¿Puedes anticiparnos algo?
TIM SMITH: Sí,
definitivamente habrá algunos elementos nuevos en el directo, pero para
experimentarlo y verlo bien, tenéis que venir y verlo por vosotros mismos. ¡No
quiero revelar secretos aquí!
Do you have any surprise or any plans
alternative to this tour for 2015? Can you anticipate anything to us?
Tim Smith: Yes
there are definitely some new elements to the show but to experience and see
that, well you've got to come along and see it for yourselves. I don't want to
give away the secrets here!

¿Creéis que el mundo
digital va a terminar con la música tal como la conocemos hoy en día? ¿Cómo
veis el futuro de la música?
JASON BARWICK: Bueno,
ya ha cambiado la forma de comprar y escuchar música. Por eso hay que aceptarlo
y trabajar con ello. Definitivamente tiene sus ventajas pero también sus
desventajas. Lo principal es que la gente todavía quiere salir y ver bandas en directo,
que siempre es una experiencia diferente a escuchar algo grabado. Muchas bandas,
que de otra manera no serían capaces de conseguir que su música llegara a la
gente, usar Internet para lograrlo, es una buena forma. Esto le ha dado a las
propias bandas algún poder y el control que antes estaba siempre en las manos
de las casas discográficas a la hora de para levantar y promover una banda del
momento.
Pero por otro lado, es muy fácil descargar música de manera
ilegal y las bandas que se basan en la venta de discos para ganarse la vida, están
sufriendo Y, también supongo, que la música al ser tan accesible, hace que la
capacidad de atención del oyente sea más corta porque hay mucho que escuchar,
pero espero que una vez que se identifican un sonido que realmente les guste,
se pongan a investigar a esa banda y colaboren en ellos, y como he dicho antes,
vayan a verlos en los conciertos en directo.
Una vez dicho esto, no cabe duda que en los últimos años se
ha notado un incremento del interés ¡por los viejos discos de vinilo! Un disco
de vinilo es definitivamente algo especial y creo que la gente se da cuenta de
ello. De ahí la razón que ahora los verdaderos amantes de la música compren con
tan gran interés, como loa hacían años atrás.
Do you think the digital world will end with
music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?
Jason
Barwick: Well, it already has changed the way we buy and listen to music
already. So you have to embrace it and work with it. It definitely has its
advantages but also its disadvantages. The main thing is that people still come
out and see bands live which is always a different experience to listening to
something recorded. many bands that otherwise would not be able to get their
music out in front of people can use the Internet to achieve this which is a
good thing. It has given individual bands some power and control for themselves
where previously it was always in the hands of the record labels to pick up and
promote a band of the moment.
But on the
other hand it's so easy just to download music illegally and bands that rely on
sales of records for a living do suffer. And also I guess because music is so
accessible it does make the attention span of the listener a lot shorter
because there is so much to listen to, but hopefully once they identify a sound
they really love they start to research that band and get involved in them and
like I said before go to see them at live concerts.
Having said
all of this we have definitely noticed a
far greater interest over the last few years in the old vinyl records! A vinyl
record is definitely something special
and I think people realise this, hence the reason for the true music
lovers they buy them now with such keen interest as they used to in past years.

your best memory about music?
Tim Smith:

¿Qué opinión tenéis
sobre la actual situación económica de Europa y del mundo en general?
TIM SMITH: Realmente estos últimos años han sido muy
difíciles. Tenemos la esperanza que, como en tiempos anteriores, ya que todo da
vueltas en círculos, ahora estamos en el buen camino de nuevo. Cuando las cosas
están abajo del todo, sólo hay una dirección en la que puede ir todo ¡hacia arriba!
What do you think about the current economic situation
in Europe and in the world in general?
Tim Smith: It has definitely been a very difficult last few years. Let's hope that as
in previous times everything goes round in circles and we are now on the way up
again. When things are down there is only one way everything can go, up!
