B-Movie es una formación inglesa creada en 1979 en Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, con influencias de Ultravox, Simple Minds, Magazine, Wire, The Cure, Joy Division, The Doors, los primeros Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Tubeway Army, ..., con grandes himnos en los 80 como Remembrance Day (1981) y Nowhere Girl (1982).

Tras su separación en 1985, el grupo de Post Punk, se reformó en 2004, volviendo a actuar en directo y grabando nuevo material en 2013, con el LP, The Age of Illusion,  y cuya formación actual está compuesta por Steve Hovington (voz y bajo), Paul Statham (guitarras), Rick Holliday (teclados) y Graham Boffey (bateria y coros).

La banda británica ha prometido su mejor disco para el 2015. Nos mantenemos a la espera, mientras, tratamos de obtener información al respecto de Steve Hovington,

THE INTERVIEW

¿Por qué el nombre de B Movie? ¿Aún te acuerdas?

Eso fue en 1978 cuando yo tenía 17 años. Mientras hojeaba un libro en clase de arte en la escuela, me encontré con un cartel de una película de Andy Warhol llamada Blue Movie. No sé por qué, pero algo hizo clic.

Me acababa de unir recientemente a una banda punk que se llamaba en un principio The Aborted, pero había cambiado su nombre a Studio 10. Yo era el cantante y bajista y no estaba contento con el nombre y quería algo que fuera más interesante. Pensé que podría ser un poco arriesgado llamar después a banda, como una película de sexo, por lo acorté a B-Movie.

Why the name B-Movie? Do you still remember?

It was 1978 and I was 17 years old. Whilst flicking through a book in art class at school, I came across a poster for a film by Andy Warhol called Blue Movie. I don’t know why but something clicked.

I’d recently joined a punk band which were originally called The Aborted but had changed their name to Studio 10. I was now singer and bass player and wasn’t happy with the name and wanted something that was more interesting. I thought it might be a bit risky calling the band after a sex film so shortened it to B-Movie.

En tu último álbum, las canciones de B-Movie olvidan los 80 y me recuerdan al sonido de los 60 y 70: Rock, Psicodelia y obviamente, Pop. Una curiosa mezcla de estilos que da como resultado el exquisito sonido de tu música. Así que, ¿cuáles realmente tus verdaderas influencias?

B-Movie siempre fue una mezcla de estilos y de influencias. Esa fue probablemente la razón por la que no tuvieron más éxito en aquella época.

Éramos difícil de encasillar o categorizar, un grupo de verdad y nuestro sonido aspiraba a ser épico y grandioso, con grandes melodías y mucha atmósfera. No estábamos muy interesados en la imagen. Supongo que en eso, estábamos más cerca de Pink Floyd. Nos gustaba  Magazine, Simple Minds y ¡Ultravox! y todavía nos gustan.

El nuevo álbum va a recuperar nuestras raíces y el mostrar lo grande que fue B-Movie.

In your last album, the songs of B-Movie forget the 80s and remind me the sound around the 60s and 70s: Rock, Psicodelia and obviously, Pop. A curious mixture of styles resulting in the exquisite sound of your music. So, what are your musical influences really?

B-Movie were always a mix of styles and influences. That is probably why we were not more successful at the time.

We were hard to pigeon-hole or categorise. We were a real band and our sound aspired to be epic and grand with big melodies and lots of atmosphere. We weren’t that interested in image. I suppose in that way we were closer to Pink Floyd. We loved Magazine, Simple Minds and Ultravox! and still do.

The new album was about recapturing our roots and establishing what was great about B-Movie.

¿Por qué has titulado "Age of Illusion" a este último disco?

El mundo ha cambiado radicalmente desde que hicimos nuestro primer disco. En aquella época, los sintetizadores eran nuevos y eran instrumentos que reemplazaban a la guitarra del punk, como el sonido del futuro. Tuvimos un par de sintetizadores analógicos y un piano Fender Rhodes, que  agregó una gran dimensión a nuestro sonido. Con el tiempo, es mucho más fácil hacer música, que es bueno de alguna manera, pero donde tal vez se haya perdido esa emoción en buscar nuevas formas de expresarnos.

Encuentro la música actual bastante aburrida, en comparación con la era post punk, y ya no hay que grandes y preceptivos letristas tampoco. Las bandas y artistas son muy conscientes de la parte comercial y de marketing de todo esto, cuando deberían estar pensando sólo de hacer buena música. Así que todo se ha vuelto un poco hueco, superficial y rancio, y creo que las marcas corporativas masivas han tomado el relevo. Echo de menos un retorno a la inteligencia, a la innovación y a la originalidad en la música. Trato de comentar lo que está pasando y de expresar lo que se siente vivir en la era digital.

Why you titled "Age of Illusion" to your last disc?

The world has changed radically since we made our first record. Back then, synthesisers were new and were instruments that replaced the guitar of punk as the sound of the future. We had a couple of analogue synths and a Fender Rhodes piano but it added a big dimension to our sound. Over time it has become much easier to make music, which is great in one way but perhaps we have lost that thrill of finding new ways to express ourselves. I find music these days quite dull in comparison with the post punk era and there aren’t that many great, perceptive lyricists around either. Bands and artists are too aware of the business and marketing side of things when they should be thinking just about making great music. So everything has become a bit hollow, shallow and stale and I think the massive corporate brands have taken over. I yearn for a return to intelligence and innovation and originality in music. I am trying to make some comment about what’s going on and trying to express how it feels to live in the digital age.

Algo ha cambiado respecto de discos anteriores a “Age of Illusion”, ¿qué es? Creo que suena menos Pop y más la Psicodelia de los 60 y al Rock de los 70 y 90.

Tratamos de seguir siendo fieles a nosotros mismos. Creo que somos mejores músicos ahora y las canciones son más concisas.

Se trata de crear grandes temas e imágenes en las que la gente puede perderse Tratar de hacer algo un poco diferente en lugar de hacer lo mismo. La ética, es todavía la exploración de la imaginación y se niega a rendirse al camino fácil.

Something has changed from previous albums. Who is different in “Age of Illusion”? I think it sounds less to Pop and more like to Psicodelia of 60, and to Rock music of 70s, 90s.

We’re trying to remain true to ourselves. I think we’re better musicians now and the songs are more concise.

It’s about creating big themes and pictures that people can lose themselves in. Trying to do something a bit different rather than following. The ethic is still about exploring the imagination and refusing to surrender to the easy route.

Casi diez álbumes y más de 30 años en la carretera. Han pasado muchas cosas en este tiempo a Steve Hovington. ¿Puedes contarnos alguna anécdota?

Supongo que uno de mis mejores recuerdos fue estar sentado en una sala de conferencia en la Universidad, escuchando una conferencia aburrida, cuando alguien llamó a la puerta y entró alguien preguntando por mí, que decía que había una llamada telefónica para mí abajo. La llamada era de nuestra discográfica independiente, que me informa de que un coche estaba de camino para recogerme y llevarme a Londres para grabar 'Remembrance Day' para un sello discográfico importante. Me quedé muy sorprendido y descolocado.

La vida ta nunca fue igual.

Hemos tenido momentos increíbles y conocidos con muchos de nuestros ídolos. Recientemente conocí a Peter Hook (Joy Divison) en Cruceros Ochenteros. Obviamente, uno de mis grandes héroes. Nos embarcamos en el Barcelona y nos echamos unas buenas risas, sobre todo cuando ¡nos asignaron un camarote a los dos con una cama doble! Por suerte, logramos resolverlo en camarotes separados!

B-Movie ha tenido algunos momentos increíbles y todavía lo tiene. Lo sigo intentando ¡y pienso que lo mejor está aún por venir!

Around ten albums and more than 30 years on the road. Many things have happened at this time to Steve Hovington. Any anecdote you can tell us?

I suppose one of my greatest memories is sitting in a lecture room at University, listening to a boring lecture, when there was a knock at the door and someone came in asking for me as there was a phone call for me downstairs. The phone call was from our indie record label, informing me that a car was on it’s way to pick me up and take me to London to record ‘Remembrance Day’ for a major record label. I was shocked and unprepared.

Life was never the same again.

We have had some amazing times and met many of our idols. I recently met Peter Hook on the Cruceros Ochenteros. Obviously a great hero of mine. We boarded at Barcelona and had a good laugh, especially when we were allocated a cabin together with one double bed! Luckily we managed to sort out separate cabins!

B-Movie have had some incredible times and still do. I still try and think that the best is still to come!

Este año se cumplen 35 años desde que B-Movie comenzó como grupo. ¿Cómo te sientes después de tanto tiempo en el mundo de la música y de ser un histórico en el panorama de la música pop británica? ¿Qué se puede mantener la ilusión de un músico cuando ya ha logrado casi todo?

Bueno, yo no diría que lo hemos conseguido casi todo.

Seguimos siendo unos apasionados de la música y vamos a publicar un nuevo álbum en 2015.La creatividad sigue formando parte de mi. Mientras, me siento inspirado por la música, así que sigo adelante.

This year marks 35 years since B-Movie began as a band. How do you feel after this time in the music world, and being an historical in the panorama of British Pop music? What can maintain the illusion of a musician when it has already achieved almost everything?

Well, I wouldn’t say we have achieved almost everything.

We’re still passionate about music and we will be releasing a new album in 2015. It’s still about the creativity for me. As long as I feel inspired by music, I will keep going.

¿Tienes alguna sorpresa o plan alternativo para el 2015? ¿Puedes anticiparnos algo? ¿Para cuándo un nuevo álbum?

Sí, ¡habrá nuevo álbum en 2015! Las canciones se están mezclando. ¡Será el mejor que hemos hecho hasta ahora!

Do you have any surprise or any plans alternative to this year 2014 and 2015? Can you anticipate anything to us? When a new album?

Yes, there will be a new album in 2015! The songs are coming together. It will be the best yet!

¿Crees que el mundo digital va a acabar con la música tal como la conocemos hoy en día? ¿Cuál es el futuro de la música?

La belleza sonora de la música grabada, sin duda ha sido diluida por el formato digital. La dinámica la ha comprimido para que todo sea estridente y en su cara.

El peligro es que los jóvenes pierden el interés en la música, ya que no les mueve ni les excitas. Siempre habrá buena música aunque el motivo que lo conduzca sea el amor en vez de la comercialización.

Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?

The sonic beauty of recorded music has definitely been diluted by the digital format. Dynamics have been compressed so that everything is loud and in your face.

The danger is that young people will lose interest in music as it doesn’t move or excite them. There will always be great music though as long as the over riding motive is love rather than commerciality.

¿Cuál es tu mejor recuerdo sobre la música?

Diseñar mis propias cubiertas de los álbumes de mi imaginaria banda cuando tenía 16 años. Nos llamábamos Blue Mist y éramos un grupo de masas. Después de nuestro cuádruple álbum conceptual, nos dividíamos y no nos volvíamos a ver nunca más.

What is your best memory about music?

Designing my own imaginary album covers for my imaginary band when I was 16. We were called Blue Mist and were massive. After our quadruple concept album we split up and were never seen again.
