"Play It Cool" es mucho más que un disco de power pop, es un trabajo que destila new wave, que tiene aroma a glam rock y que deja un retrogusto al pop y al rock de finales de los 70's y de los primeros 80's.

Kurt Baker se adentró mundo del rock'n'roll cuando con tan sólo 15 años decide fundar su primera banda, The Leftovers. En 2010 Kurt Baker emprende su carrera en solitario, que le consagra como el mejor músico de power pop de su generación. Tras el lanzamiento de su segundo LP, "Brand New Beat", se establece en España, dando comienzo a una vorágine musical que le lleva a compaginar su tarea en tres formaciones: Kurt Baker Combo, Bullet Proof Lovers y The New Trocaderos.

Play It Cool (2015)

"Play It Cool" es, simple y llanamente, un disco de ROCK’N’ROLL, lo cual ya es mucho decir. "Send Me To Mars" es la canción que abre el disco, la única versión del LP, un temazo de los Wild Hearts que te agita desde la cabeza hasta las uñas de los pies, da gusto empezar así un disco.

LA ENTREVISTA

Las canciones de Kurt Baker, suenan a Pop, a Punk, a Rock & Roll, ... una fantástica mezcla de estilos que se traduce en el abrumador sonido de tu música. ¿Cuáles son realmente tus influencias musicales?

Estoy influenciado por todo lo que envuelve ese reino de "Rock N 'Roll", que en realidad cubre un gran área de estilos diferentes... pero aín así mis gustos musicales están en todas partes. Me encanta todo desde  ABBA a Motley Crue, de Glenn Miller a Joao Gilberto. Pero cuando me limito al sonido de mis discos, las mayores influencias son The Beatles, Cheap Trick, Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, The Knack ..., etc., etc.

The songs of Kurt Baker sound as Pop, Punk, Rock & Roll,... a fantastic mix of styles that results in the powering sound of your music. What are really your musical influences?

I'm influenced by everything in that whole realm of "Rock N' Roll", which really covers a big area of different styles… but even so my musical tastes are everywhere. I love everything from ABBA to Motley Crue, or Glenn Miller to Joao Gilberto. But when it comes down to the sound of my records, the biggest influences are The Beatles, Cheap Trick, Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, The Knack…, ect. ect.

Puede que "Play It Cool" sea tu mejor álbum hasta la fecha. ¿Qué es lo que inspira para hacer sus canciones?

¡Gracias! Bueno, la inspiración viene de otras grandes canciones que escucho, o experiencias de la vida. Es difícil de decir… pero muchas canciones “Play It Cool” están escritas en experiencias de la vida real, a las que se puso un toque ficticio para que también el que la escuche pueda identificarse con las letras. Por supuesto, una canción como "Monday Night" es para divertirse un lunes... Es una canción tonta, pero es la verdad, porque cuando me mudé a Madrid estaba de fiesta muchos lunes por la noche

con bastante frecuencia, por lo general en Wurlitzer Ballroom. "Doin 'It Right" trata de tocar en una banda... y la actitud de los otros grupos y personas en el negocio de la música. Luego, por supuesto, siempre hay las canciones de amor.. (risas)

Maybe "Play it Cool" is your best album to date. What inspires you when to make your songs?

Thank you! Well, the inspiration comes from other great songs I hear, or life experiences. It's hard to say.. but many songs on “Play It Cool” were written about real life situations, but put on with a fictional touch so that also the listener can relate to the lyrics. Of course, a song like "Monday Night" is about having fun on a Monday.. it's a silly song, but it's truthful because when I first moved to Madrid i'd party on Monday night quite often, usually at the Wurlitzer Ballroom. "Doin' It Right" is about playing in a band... and the attitudes of other bands and people in the music business. Then, of course there are always the love songs.. haha!

¿Por qué has titulado "Play It Cool" a su último álbum?

Fue por el título de una de los cortes, y que parecía encajar muy bien. Tócalo frío... puede significar, "tómalo con calma y relajarse, disfrutar y ‘tócalo frío! ¡No se preocupe!". Así que me pareció apropiado para el título del disco también.

Why have you titled “Play it Cool” to your last album?

It was a title of one of the tracks, and it just seemed to fit so well. Play It Cool.. it can mean, "take it easy and relax, enjoy and play it cool! Don't worry!". So it seemed fitting for the album title too.

¿Qué vamos a ver y disfrutar en tus conciertos en vivo en la gira de "Play It Cool”?

Espero tocar mucho más para promocionar el disco, y tengo la esperanza de que salga una gira con la banda estadounidense con la que grabé el disco. Esperamos hacer algunos conciertos en Europa este invierno / primavera.

What do we will see and enjoy in your live concerts for next “Play it Cool tour”?

I hope to be playing a lot more to support the record, and hopefully if all works out a tour with the American band which recorded the album. We hope to do some shows in Europe this Winter/Spring.

¿Cuáles son sus planes para el próximo año nuevo 2016? Suponemos que girar por salas y festivales. ¿Algo que puedas adelantarnos? ¿Algún evento importante?

No hay grandes festivales que pueda anunciar por ahora, pero he oído un rumor acerca de tocar en  un gran rally de motocicletas en algún lugar del desierto. ¡Podría ser interesante! El año que viene sacaré dos nuevos discos de larga duración con Bullet Proof Lovers y con Kurt Baker Combo. ¡Estoy muy entusiasmados con estos dos nuevos discos”

What are your plans for the next new year 2016? We assume that you will touring around clubs and festivals. Can you advance anything to us? Any important event?

No big festivals I can announce at the moment, but I hear a rumor about playing a huge motorcycle rally somewhere in the desert. Could be interesting! Next year i'll be releasing two new full length LP's by Bullet Proof Lovers and then the Kurt Baker Combo. Very excited about these two new records!

¿Crees que el mundo digital va a terminar con la música tal como la conocemos hoy en día? ¿Cuál crees que es el futuro de la música?

No creo que el mundo digital vaya a terminar con la música. Pero definitivamente es el cambio de la forma de escuchar y percibir la música. Muchos géneros están resistiendo, pero por la lealtad y dedicación de los fans. Así que esta música quedará con vida, pero no en el mainstream. La gente está comprando el vinilo de nuevo, lo que es guay, ya que es la mejor manera de escuchar música, desde mi punto de vista. Sin embargo, no puedo decir mucho sobre el estado de la música moderna en estos días porque casi la he bloqueado completamente fuera de mi mente, porque llegar a ser muy mala. No tengo ningún interés en ella ¡Yo sólo quiero que mi rock n 'roll!

Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?

I don't think that the digital world will end music. But it's definitely changing the way we listen and perceive music. Many genres are going more into underground, but with loyal and dedicated fans. So this music will stay alive, but just not in the mainstream. People are buying vinyl again, which is super cool.. as it's the best way to listen to music in my opinion. However, I cannot tell you much about the state of modern music these days because I've almost completely blocked it out in my mind as it has become so bad. I don't care about it. I just want my rock n' roll!

¿Cuál es tu mejor recuerdo sobre la música?

Tantos recuerdos e historias que es difícil elegir la mejor. Me gustaría decir que uno de mis recuerdos favoritos fue el primer concierto que di. Creo que fue en 1999, y yo era muy joven entonces. Mi primera banda se llamó Drain. Tuvimos como 3 canciones. Recuerdo aquel momento muy bien porque era emocionante tocar en la cafetería de nuestra escuela para 20 de nuestros amigos y algunos profesores (risas) Recuerdo que estaba nervioso, pero en el buen sentido. Era como un nerviosismo de verdadera emoción. Ya no me pongo nervioso antes de los conciertos. Pero ese tipo si me gustaría, porque te mantiene alerta y es una gran sensación de emoción intensa... ¡Una verdadera clase de felicidad para mí!

What is your best memory about music?

So many memories and stories it's hard to pick the best one. I will say that one of my favorite memories was the very first show I ever played. I think it was in 1999, and I was pretty young at the time. My first band was called Drain. We had like 3 songs. I remember the moment so well because it was exciting to play in our school cafeteria for 20 of our friends and some teachers, haha! I remember being nervous, but in a good way. It was like a truly exciting nervousness. I don't get nervous before concerts anymore... but I kind of wish I did because it keeps you on your toes and it's a great urgent exciting feeling.. a true kind of happiness for me!

¿Cómo es un día normal en la vida de Kurt Baker?

Suelo levantarme, llevar a mi perro a dar un paseo por La Latina, elijo un poco de música de jazz y beber un poco de café. Entonces enseño clases de inglés a los salvajes y locos niños de Madrid por la tarde. El rock n 'roll no paga TODAS las facturas todavía (risas) Pero sí, normalmente me gusta salir por Madrid y ¡disfrutarla! Siempre hay grandes conciertos y fiestas a los que asistir ¡en esta mágica ciudad!

How is a normal day in the life of Kurt Baker?

I usually wake up, take my dog out for a walk around La Latina, cue up some jazz music and drink some coffee. Then I teach English classes to the wild and crazy kids of Madrid in the afternoon... rock n' roll doesn't pay ALL the bills yet, haha! But yea, normally I like to hang out in the city of Madrid and have fun! Always great concerts and parties to attend in this magical city!

¿Qué piensas sobre la actual situación económica y social en España, Europa y en el mundo en general?

La situación aquí es sin duda muy diferente a lo que está pasando en mi país de América en este momento, de lo que me siento muy avergonzado. Todos los homicidios cometidos por la policía, la violencia armada y el aumento de la intolerancia es realmente peligroso y los puntos de vista de los políticos de extrema derecha. Pero, al mismo tiempo, eso está sucediendo aquí en España y Europa, con la crisis migratoria. Políticamente España, me parece muy interesante porque hay muchas más opciones a parte de los demócratas y los republicanos como ocurre en Estados Unidos, pero no importa donde vayas, siempre vas a encontrar un montón de gente realmente horrible y los políticos arruinando la vida de la gente que trabaja duro día a día. Hay corrupción en todas partes. Es bastante horrible. Luego tienes todos los problemas en Siria. Veo y leo las noticias mucho, y puedo ser bastante deprimente. A veces tengo que ponerme algo de los KISS y simplemente bailar ¡para echar la tristeza fuera!

What do you think about the current economic and social situation in Spain, Europe and in the world in general?

The situation here is certainly A LOT different than what is going on in my country of America right now, which I feel really embarrassed about. All the killings by police, the gun violence and the rise of really dangerous bigotry and far right political views. But at the same time, it's happening here in Spain and Europe as well with the migrant crisis. Politically here in Spain, I find it quite interesting because there are many more options besides just Democrat and Republic as we have in America, but no matter where you go your going to find a lot of really crappy people and politicans screwing up the lives of everyday hardworking people. There is corruption everywhere. It's pretty awful. Then you've got all the problems in Syria. I watch and read the news a lot, and it can get pretty depressing. Sometimes I need to crank up some KISS and just rock out to chase the blues away!

...Un libro?: Fahrenheit 451 de Ray Bradbury. Siempre vuelvo a este libro. Dice mucho acerca de la sociedad, y los peligros de censurar o silenciar la creatividad, el arte y la expresión.

...A book?: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. I always go back to this book.. it say so much about society, and the dangers of censoring or silencing creativity, art and expression.

...Una película?: Es una película ligera, pero me encanta "Capitán al agua". ¡Un clásico de la comedia! O “No matarás... al vecino” con Tom Hanks.

...A movie?: It's a light film, but I love "Captain Ron". A comedy classic! Or "The Burbs" with Tom Hanks.

...Una canción?: Ahora mismo te voy a decir "Reach Out" de Cheap Trick, o "All Fed Up" de Squeeze. Vi a ambas bandas tocan en directo juntas una vez, fue el espectáculo más mágico que jamás había visto. Era al aire libre y las latas de cerveza ¡realmente grandes!

...A song?: Right now i'm going to say "Reach Out" by Cheap Trick, or "All Fed Up" by Squeeze. I saw both bands play live together once, it was the most magical show ever.. it was outdoors and the cans of beer were really big!

...Un album?: "Especially For You" de The Smithereens . Es uno de mis discos favoritos desde siempre.

...An album?: The Smithereens "Especially For You". It's one of my favorite albums of all time.

...Un grupo o solista?: Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.

...A group or soloist?: Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.

...Una afición?: Me encanta hacer Zumo de Naranja recién exprimido cada mañana. Un vaso y ¡estás lista y vivo para empezar el día! Supongo que es un bonito pasatiempo para mi!

... A hobby?: I love making fresh squeezed Zumo de Naranja every morning. One glass of that and you are alive and ready to start the day! I guess that's a pretty good hobby of mine!
