Will Johnson presenta su nuevo disco “Swan City Vampires" con seis conciertos
En
solitario, el líder de los texanos Centro-matic
y South San Gabriel ofrece folk-rock
de fuerte carga sensitiva, que se agarra al esqueleto de las canciones.
En
este formato, sin compañía, explota con mayor profundidad si cabe el poder
catártico de su voz, esa espiritualidad suya de gospel blanco desvalido. Así
conquistó a la crítica en su primer tour por España en 2005.
Swan City Vampires (2015)
Además
de músico, Will Johnson, el líder de
Centro-matic y South San Gabriel, es pintor. Y pinta con el mismo estilo que hace
música y viceversa: sus canciones se asemejan a un lienzo cubierto de
pinceladas de emociones y colores primarios, que luego él va salpicando,
repasando con pluma, manchando con brochazos y encerrando en un círculo de
puntos y acentos sonoros que ahora son más sutiles, luego más audaces.
Un
desfile de sílabas envueltas en sombras, de melodías fantasmales. Algo
perceptible en los tres discos que ha firmado a su nombre -”VulturesAwait” (2004), “Scorpion”
(2012) y "SwanCityVampires"(2015)-, un currículo personal
al que también pueden sumarse el álbum
que firmó a medias con el malogrado Jason
Molina, “Molina & Johnson” (2009), y “New Multitudes”,
homenaje a Woody Guthrie aparecido
en 2012 en el que comparte protagonismo con Jim James (My Morning Jacket)
y Anders Parker (Varnaline).

THE INTERVIEW
En este último trabajo, Swan city vampires (2015) nos sorprendes
con un folk rock diferente, que mezclas con Rock, Blues, Folk, Psicodelia, un
poco de pop y ¡Jazz Experimental! Una fantástica mezcla de estilos que se convierte
en el exquisito sonido de su música. Parece que Will Johnson se inspira en los
sonidos de tiempos pasados para hacer sus temas ¿Qué puedes decirnos al respecto?
Quiero
que cada disco profundice en algún nuevo terreno sonoro con el que yo no haya
experimentado antes, y quiero que haya un poco de diversidad dentro de las
grabaciones. Me gusta cuando un disco pasa de un ambiente a otro muy
rápidamente. Mucho de eso tiene que ver con las opciones de micrófono y los tratamientos
estéticos generales de cada canción. Me gustan las grabaciones del pasado, y
escucho a un montón de viejos discos en nuestro tocadiscos en casa, así que
esos sonidos definitivamente me influencian.
In this latest album, “Swan city
vampires” (2015) you surprise us with a different Folk Rock style, mixed
with sounds like Rock, Blues, Folk, Psicodelia and a little Pop and a bit of
Experimental Jazz!. A fantastic mix of styles that results in the exquisite
sound of your music. What can you tell us about that? It seems Will Johnson is
inspired by the sounds of the old times in their themes, what can you tell us
about it?
I want each record to traverse some new sonic terrain
I may not have experimented with before, and I want there to be some diversity
within the recordings. I like when a
record can go from one vibe to another very quickly. A lot of that has to do with microphone
choices, and general aesthetic treatments of each song. I do like old sounding recordings, and listen
to a lot of old records on our turntable at home, and those sounds definitely
influence me.
¿Por qué has titulado “Swan city vampires” a tu último álbum?
¿Qué te inspira a la hora de hacer sus canciones?
Era
una colección de palabras que me pareció encajar en la grabación. Hay un poco
de tranquilidad y malestar en el título, que se ajusta a la sensación de las
grabaciones. Cuando escribo, me inspiran diferente cosas. A veces una
conversación, o un acto de la naturaleza. A veces, la siempre presente fuerza
de la locura humana. O un personaje o una narrativa con la que quiero
experimentar.
Why have you titled “Swan city
vampires” to your last album? What inspires you when to make your songs?
It was a collection of words that I thought fit the
record. There's some tranquility and
discomfort within the title, and that fit the feel of the recordings. Different things can inspire me when I'm
writing. Sometimes a conversation, or an
act of nature. Sometimes the ever
present force of human folly. Or a
character or narrative that I want to experiment with.
¿Qué vamos a ver y disfrutar en tus
conciertos en este gira de “Swan city
vampires” por España?
Estoy
tocando solo en acústico en esta gira, por lo que es un espectáculo bastante
tranquilo. Realmente no trabajo con un setlist
en ese tipo de espectáculos. Interpreto cualquier canción que siente bien en ese
momento.
What do we will see and enjoy in your live concerts for this “Swan city
vampires tour” around Spain?
I'm playing solo acoustic on this tour, so it's a
pretty quiet show. I don't really work
with a setlist on those types of shows.
I just got with whatever song feels right at the time.
Este año hace 20 años desde que Will
Johnson grabó sus primeros discos con Centro-matic. ¿Cuál es la diferencia
entre la música de Will Johnson de hoy y de tu música hace 20 años?
Mi
voz es un poco más profunda y tal vez más experimentada ahora. Escuché de nuevo
la reedición de “Redo The Stacks” el año pasado, y sonaba como un niño.
This year marks 20 years since Will Johnson recorded the first albums
with Centro-matic. What is the difference between the music of Will Johnson
today and your music 20 years ago?
My voice is a little deeper and maybe more road tested
now. Listening back to the reissue of “Redo
The Stacks” last year, I sounded like a kid.
¿Cuáles son tus planes futuros? ¿Puedes
adelantarnos algo?
Estoy
construyendo algunas exposiciones más de arte en el béisbol para 2016, y planeo
hacer otro disco en solitario en primavera. Nuestra banda Overseas tiene una
disco que necesitamos terminar, también.
What are your future plans? Can you anticipate anything to us?
I'm building some more baseball art shows for 2016,
and plan to make another solo record in the Spring. Our band Overseas has a
record that we need to finish, too.
¿Crees que el mundo digital va a acabar
con la música tal como la conocemos hoy en día? ¿Cuál crees que es el futuro de
la música?
Creo
que las reglas siempre cambian, y le toca al artista definir un camino que
funciona mejor para ellos y dónde esté en sus vidas. Creo que da igual lo que
pase, una cosa importante es estar siempre trabajando en mantener una fuerte línea
de conexión con los fans. Tanto si hay que hacer ediciones limitadas, conciertos
en un salón de casa, hacer gras o conciertos únicos o diferentes, será todo
jugar limpio. Hay una gran cantidad de capacidad y posibilidades en manos del
artista, ahora que el panorama de las discográficas ha cambiado tanto.
Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today?
What do you think is the future of music?
I think the rules are ever changing, and it's up to
the artist to define a path that works best for them and where they are in
their lives. I think no matter what
happens, an important thing to always keep working at is keeping the line of
connection with fans strong. Whether
that means limited edition releases, living room shows, arranging unique or
unusual shows or tours, then it's all fair game. There's a lot of power and possibility in the
artist's hands now that the label scene has changed so much.
¿Cuál es tu mejor recuerdo de la música?
Tengo
la suerte de tener muchos. Probablemente, las giras y hacer discos con Centro-matic
serían de mis favoritos de forma general. Maduramos juntos, y estoy orgulloso
de lo que hicimos. La banda se separó, pero siempre será mi familia.
What is your best memory about music?
I'm lucky to have a lot. Touring and making records
with Centro-matic would probably be my favorite memory overall. We became adults together, and I'm proud of
what we did. The band is over, but they
will always be my family.
¿Qué piensas sobre la actual situación
económica y social en España, Europa y en el mundo en general?
No
soy un experto en la materia. Tan pronto como creo que tengo algo pensado, se
produce un cambio y todo se me vuelve confuso de nuevo. Trato de seguir
aprendiendo, tratar de ser respetuoso, y ver lo positivo en el esfuerzo humano
todos los días.
What do you think about the current economic and social situation in
Spain, Europe and in the world in general?
I'm no expert on the matter. As soon as I think I've got something figured
out, something shifts and it all confuses me again. I try to keep learning, try to be respectful,
and see the positives in the human effort every day.
