In your latest double album, Until Morning / Come Out of the Dark (2011) you surprised us with blues and rock, sometimes with elements of folk and jazz, country and roots. What can you tell us about the mixture of styles?
I listen to so many kinds of music, and I write many kinds of music as well. I get bored if Iʼm only working within one genre, I just canʼt do it. As a result, though each album might lean more towards one style or another, there is a mix of genres on every disc. In this case, itʼs was a little different with regards to how the record shaped up. The previous three albums had each been recorded in the space of a month or so. This one was recorded in fits and starts over a period of over eighteen months, and during that time, I was going back and forth between Nashville and Barcelona, learning Spanish, listening to a lot of new music, and making plans to spend a lot of time over here in Europe… so when it came time to finish the record, I felt like two separate projects with two distinct sounds had started to evolve. One side, Until Morning, felt darker, more rock and blues, with more of the Spanish influence inside of it. The other side, Come Out of the Dark, felt more hopeful, more folk and possibly alt-country, reflecting much more of my life in Nashville. The idea behind the two sides of the project is the dichotomy of my life at the time, but the dichotomy of life and of love that exists in general.

Me encanta España.

Which is the reason that leads to an American artist to do a long and intense tour around Spain? What do you expect from the Spanish public?
My experiences playing in Spain have been really positive so far! I love Spain. The public has been wonderful, really supportive and attentive, as has the press. I feel very lucky, and we are all very excited about this tour. The band is a mix of Spanish and American musicians. We decided to do this tour of Spain after doing the taping for Conciertos de Radio 3 in Madrid – we just want to get out there and reach more people, and are happy that we have the
opportunity.

What will be different on this European tour versus what we hear on the disc? What should the audience expect to see at your show?
The albums were constructed over a period of time with my Nashville musicians – there were maybe ten musicians on the record. In this case, itʼs a new band, traveling as a four-piece.
We maintain the spirit of each song, but of course they change in a live setting. Some songs that were softer take on a “rock” life of their own, others have extended sections. And there is a lot of audience interaction, a lot of story-telling -- I like to get to know the people at the concerts. I donʼt think there is a point in trying to recreate the sounds from the album exactly – people can listen to those sounds on the records – and itʼs exciting to see songs breathe and
evolve over time. We sometimes throw in new songs as well, which arenʼt and may never be recorded on a record.

Tori Sparks - Mama (2011)

Looking at your concert schedule, we see that you do not have a single night off in 10 daysʼ worth of traveling. Youʼre playing every night. We think this could be very hard. How is life if youʼre always traveling? When do you find time for yourself to relax?
It can be very hard, thatʼs true. These ten days will be complicated because I will be with the band, and will have to tour-manage or coordinate for them as well. But, the idea of ten shows in ten nights is not that bad for me. Iʼm accustomed to playing almost every night when Iʼm on the road. Last year, when I was touring in Europe, I had twenty-nine shows in thirty three days, in eight countries. Itʼs better to maximize my time if Iʼm going to be traveling, though if I can, I like to take the time to see a little of the places where Iʼm staying. Iʼm interested to see Segovia for example. As far as relaxing goes, I can relax sometimes when Iʼm not on the road – other times, there is no internet connection available in the places Iʼm staying, so Iʼm forced to relax to a point. Thereʼs nothing else to do!

What are Tori Sparksʼ plans for 2012? Do you have any new projects? Is there any news?
I will be in Germany and the Czech Republic later in the year, and trying to see if I can work out a tour of Japan around a festival in September. My plan is to tour as much as possible, both solo and with the band. Also, Iʼll be staying in Granada for a month later this year to study flamenco with professors there – Iʼm very excited about that. Iʼve started writing more songs in both Spanish and English, though I donʼt know when a new album will be possible – at least a couple of years from now.

Do you think the digital world will end music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?
Everything will be digital eventually, but there will always be music – musicians will always create it, even when weʼre not paid for it, although the arrangements and methods of production might change. And people will always want more music, though the question is inculcating a sense of responsibility into the listening public, so that they place value on the music, instead of just enjoying it but not understanding the financial considerations behind it.
The technology still hasnʼt quite caught up with peopleʼs ever-shortening attention spans – there are so many things competing for peopleʼs attention these days – and the laws and monetary mechanisms are still way behind the technology. I think weʼll figure it out eventually, but at the moment I have no idea what the face of the music industry will look like in 20 years.
I donʼt think it will have disappeared, though.

What is your best memory about music in your life?
I donʼt know if I could pick just one! Memories of recording the first album, and all the albums afterwards – those were life-changing experiences. Itʼs hard to explain the things that can happen inside a studio, but Iʼve seen some magical things. With regards to a musical memory as an observer: I saw U2 play a couple of concerts on the Elevation Tour in 2001. The first time I saw them play was one of the most amazing things Iʼve ever seen. The concert was
pure joy, pure energy. It seemed like after the concert, the band could have lead the stadium of people in a march to take over Miami had they wanted to. The second time I saw them was a few weeks after September 11th 2001, and because of the tragedy with the Twin Towers, it was a much more intimate experience… even though it was also in an arena. They had huge screens with the names of all of the victims scrolling across. They explained that they had
considered cancelling the shows, but preferred to use the concerts as outlets to preserve the memory of some of the people who had died instead. U2 sometimes gets flack for being a bunch of egomaniacs, but Iʼve never seen a humbler performance by a rock band than that night. Both times it was possible to feel the energy of thousands of people all focused on the same thought, albeit on very different thoughts at those two separate times. They were really powerful experiences.

Have you heard of the Spanish Revolution? What do you think about it?
Iʼve learned a lot about the history of Spain since arriving here, and itʼs a complicated history.
My observations are those of someone from the outside looking in -- I was not there, so Iʼm learning about all this second- or third-hand.

Here is what I think:
1) Itʼs critical that all individuals in any nation be allowed to preserve their culture and exercise their beliefs, whether those individuals are part of the majority or the minority, so long as they arenʼt causing harm to anyone else. If they are, thatʼs another story.

2) The role of the government in any “free” nation should be to represent the peopleʼs interests and protect them from internal or external threats. But the system of governments always get corrupted by private interests.

3) Any man has a right to defend himself or his home, but itʼs innocent people – grandmothers, babies, teenagers – who always get caught in
the crossfire when politics turns violent. Most conflicts have to do with money and power, not idealism.

I have a Spanish ex-lover who tells me that Iʼm too diplomatic and too polite, that itʼs better to be blunt. Possibly, my answer to your question above is too diplomatic, or sounds like itʼs not addressing the heart of the issue. But itʼs my job to make music, not to weigh in on a political situation that is still a very sensitive subject to many people here. I understand what happened on an intellectual level, and have my more specific opinions, but it doesnʼt feel right
trying to explain them here.

¿Podría decirnos...
Could you tell us your thoughts on…

... A book?: Atlas Shrugged (1957) by Ayn Rand is my favorite book. I buy it for friends for Christmas in various languages. Itʼs an adventure story as well as an important philosophical work. Iʼve been told sheʼs not very well-known in Spain, but I recommend her. I realize that her philosophies are very strict, and that some people see her as forcing a choice between “her way or the highway,” but thatʼs up to your interpretation. The world is big and complicated.
Life is crazy. I think there is room for flexibility. But every time I read the book, it makes me happy, makes me feel cleaner.

... A movie?: Iʼm in the middle of watching Mysteries of Lisbon (2010) by Raoul Ruiz – havenʼt finished it yet, because itʼs four hours long. Movies like this one, and Farewell My Concubine, are just so beautiful and thoughtful and deep that they can get away with it!

Clásicos como Let it Be, menos conocido cosas como The Trapeze Swinger.
Me gusta.

... A song? A tough question for any songwriter! There are so many that are mind-blowing.
Classics like Let it Be, less-known stuff like The Trapeze Swinger. But hereʼs what popped into my mind... I donʼt usually listen to so-called typical pop music, like the artist Pink for example, but I head a song of hers called Fistful of Glitter. There are some people who praised the song for being sincere, and others who panned it for being cheesy. I like it.
Thereʼs a line in it that says: “Have you ever looked fear in the face and said, I just donʼt care.” The song is about the moment before taking the plunge, whatever that might be – and the idea that, if you donʼt take risks in life, youʼll never gain anything at all. Iʼve taken some huge risks in the past year, some of them absolutely terrifying. A few of them have paid off in big ways, and others have left me crushed – but I donʼt regret any of them. Itʼs worse to die
wondering, “what if I had just tried?” Itʼs how you learn, right?

... An album?: Tom Waitsʼ Rain Dogs (1985) is one of the strangest albums youʼll ever hear, but his songs and his arrangements on that record have influenced countless artists. I hear something new every time I listen, itʼs been on of my favorite albums since I was fourteen
years old.

... A group or soloist?: Iʼve been obsessively listening to Buika since being in Barcelona –
the Mi Nina Lola (2006) and Nina de Fuego (2008) albums are my favorites. I just love the way she bites into the words. She just collaborated with Anoushka Shankar and Javier Limon on Shankarʼs new record Traveller (2012), itʼs a wonderful fusion of Indian music and Flamenco.

Best wishes from Spain, thank you very much.
Muchas gracias a usted!
