Boney Fields & The Bone's Project - Changing for the future (2013). Entrevista a Boney Fields

EL ARTISTA  THE ARTIST

Boney Fields was born in the Northern district of Chicago in 1958. His family moved to the West Side where he grew up among eight brothers and sisters in a strong musical environment. Both his father and uncle played guitar and sang gospel, while his mother was the local church choir leader.
It was when watching artists such as Louis Armstrong or James Brown on television that young Boney decided he too wanted to be a musician. At age 12, he asked to play drums in his school band. But his music teacher had another plan for him : as trumpet players were lacking and very needed in his college band, Boney had to play trumpet !!

Boney Fields & The Bone's Projetct - Live at Jazz á Vienne

He started playing professionally in 1979, working with different local both funk and jazz bands. His main influences at the time included the James Brown and the JB’s, Earth Wind & Fire and Bootsy Collins on the funk side as well as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis or Clifford Brown on the jazz end.
He also hung out in many blues clubs in Chicago, listening to some of the most influential blues musicians such as Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Johnny Dollar or Albert King...
He got his first major break in the blues circuit two years later when Jimmy Johnson hired him for his US tour.
Then, Boney Fields left Chicago for LA in 1983 where he played with Smokey WILSON and Albert Collins.
He returned to Chicago the following year to join Little Milton’s band for one year.

In 1985, he joined The James Cotton Blues Band. He quickly became the horn section leader before being appointed musical director and bandleader. James Cotton was a turning point in Boney’s career: Not only did he record two albums with Cotton but he also started touring internationally and played with major artists such as Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, AC Reed, Eddie Clearwater, Valerie Wellington and others...
Boney still never misses an opportunity to say how impressed he was by James Cotton’s sense of performance, by his aura and energy on stage and the way he captured the audience’s attention.

Today however, his main concern lies with The Bone’s Project. Entertainer, singer trumpet player and MC all at the same time, Boney leads his powerful seven-piece band on all stages and festivals throughout Europe at a rate of over 50 gigs a year.
His only motto: the audience must have a good time!!! This is party music, very much away from all clichés about Blues being an old man whining over his guitar.

Through his many encounters with master musicians from all over the world and different musical horizons, Boney has created his own vision of the blues. His music is a musical spectrum so wide it goes from blues to funk, from world music to rock and from rhythm and blues to jazz without even hearing the difference or thinking about it.
A form of blues that is not interested in belonging to which or which musical chapel, a music whose only concern is for the public to have a roar of a time...

LA ENTREVISTA  THE INTERVIEW

Who is Boney Fields?
Boney Fieds is a trumpet player and singer from Chicago, with a history of driving audiences to a boiling point of entertainment.

After four years without any disk editing, what surprises we'll be found in your next album 'Changing for the future'?
First of all, the reason I haven’t released any CD for 3 years is because I’ve been busy producing and arranging for other projects. In my next álbum, you’ll find more soul, R & B style that style mixes with a blues touch but gives the music a much modern touch that should reach older and younger audience.

It seems that Boney Fields is inspired by the sounds of the 60’s and 70’s in their themes, what can you tell us about it?
The 60s and 70s are the era that I was born, so it’s only natural that I am acostumed to this music …. That’s the music that I grew up to like.

What are we going to see and enjoy in your live show?
Exactly what you said : a live show … It won’t be just musicians being on stage and palying music, it’s gonna be a show ..

Is this your first time in Spain? What do you expect from the Spanish public in your show?
No it’s not my first time in Spain, but first time in Saragossa. But I did quite a few jobs around Spain with Tonky Blues Band. The spanish audience always seems to love what I do.

¿Por qué vas a titular Changing for the future a tu próximo álbum?

Why have you titled 'Changing for the future' to your next album ?
Because like anything else, everybody has to evolve from what they’ve been doing to make changes in their life, make changes for the better. You just can’t go through doing the same stuff all the time. That would make me bored … That’s why I changed some things in my music.

Do you have any surprise or any plans alternative to this tour for 2012 and 2013? Can you anticipate anything to us?
I hope that the album does well, and that I can come back to Spain with my band the Bone’s Project!

Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?
I think digital music will have a big part in music but you can never take away the original sound of musicians. Machines and computers will never replace completely a drummer, or a bass player, not even mentionning horns …
Internet is another point of change, and we have to get ready for it … I don’t know how yet, but I’m not gonna give up the game!

What is your best memory about music?
Touring with Lucky Peterson. It showed me the real meaning of being a musician, perfecting your art, keep making your music getting better and better. And he is also a very good a friend.

Have you heard of the #15-M or also called the #Spanish-revolution?. What do you think about it?
Yes of course I’ve heard about it, and I think this is very courageous and positive, to stand up against a system that has been proclaimed as  “no other alterntiv” for years. And like the rest, I think the world has to change, and I believe that if we really try and want to change this world, we can do it ; It will take time, but it’s possible. And at least it’s worth and necessary to try.

Do you think the black music (blues, jazz, soul, …) is past in fashion?
Of course not! It has a taste of tradition, but that doesn’t mean old fashionned … And I see a lot of artists, still nowdays,  singing blues and soul, like Emmy Winehouse, Christina AGUILERA in her álbum back to Basics, Seal who  did covers of soul standards etc ...
As a contrary, I think there’s a big revival for this music.
